No. 11 Oklahoma comes up short at Texas A&M

Nov 7, 2010 - 3:48 AM College Station, TX (Sports Network) - Ryan Tannehill completed 19-of-32 throws for 225 yards and two touchdowns, as Texas A&M used three remarkable goal-line stands to upend 11th-ranked Oklahoma, 33-19, at Kyle Field.

Cyrus Gray carried 21 times for 122 yards and a score while Ryan Swope made eight catches for 136 yards and a TD for the Aggies (6-3, 3-2 Big 12), who beat the Sooners for the first time in eight tries going back to 2002.

"I'm proud of the guys. I thought they prepared well this week," said Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman. "This was a big game for us and was the next step for us. It wasn't the final step, but the next step. We played real well. We responded in difficult situations. They played with the heart of an Aggie and I'm proud of them."

Landry Jones connected on 36-of-59 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown, along with one interception, while Ryan Broyles made eight receptions to tie Mark Bradley for the school's all-time record with 221 for the Sooners (7-2, 3-2), who have dropped two out of three after winning their first six games.

"A&M played a great game, they outplayed us tonight," Jones said. "They were doing a good job of covering our vertical routes. We had a go route early in the game that I missed. You can't do those things on the road and expect to win. They just stopped us on the goal line. We expect to score every time we get the ball. Once you get down there and they stuff you there's not much you can do about it. They played a lot more physical and had lower pads."

DeMarco Murray ran for 80 yards and a score on 25 tries, caught 10 passes for 67 yards and returned four kickoffs for 104 yards to pass Joe Washington to become the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 6,100.

The Sooners opened the game at their own 10-yard line and the first play from scrimmage resulted in a safety when the ball was snapped over Jones and out of the end zone.

The Aggies started their first possession at their own 30 following the free kick and moved 70 yards on six plays to push their lead to 9-0 2:58 into the contest.

Tannehill tossed to Hutson Prioleau in the left flat from a yard out to finish the march that he started with a 48-yard gallop on the first play.

The Sooners took over at their own 38 with seven minutes to go in the opening stanza and had first-and-goal at the Aggies' four, but could not score.

Murray was stopped for no gain before a penalty moved the ball to the two. Fullback Trey Millard reached the one before Murray was stopped for no gain again on third down. Murray ran right on fourth down but was taken down by Von Miller for no gain to finish off the goal-line stand.

The hosts added to their lead on Randy Bullock's 27-yard field goal with 1:25 left before the intermission. The Aggies moved 45 yards in seven plays before the drive stalled at the 10.

Oklahoma was held to 10 yards on 14 carries and 101 total yards in the first half.

Coryell Judie brought the second half kickoff back 100 yards for a score. He started up the right side, shed a tackle and got past the kicker -- the last man to have a realistic shot at him -- at his own 35 yard before racing up the right sideline untouched.

Oklahoma finally got on the board on its next series, moving 71 yards on 15 plays. Murray capped the drive with a one-yard scoring run with just over 11 minutes to play in the quarter.

Jamell Fleming's second interception of the game on Texas A&M's next possession set the Sooners up at the Aggies' 26. However, the visitors could not muster a first down and had to settle for a 45-yard field goal, the longest of the season, from Patrick O'Hara.

Following a three-and-out by Texas A&M and a 31-yard punt return by Broyles, the Sooners took over at the Aggies' 32. OU covered the distance in 10 plays, the last of which was a five-yard pass that Jones zipped to Trey Franks, who came down just inbounds in the right corner of the end zone, to make it 19-17 with 4:12 left in the period.

Oklahoma bridged the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters with an eight-play drive that stalled at the Texas A&M 32. O'Hara came on for an apparent field goal try, but the Sooners instead tried a fake that almost resulted in the go-ahead touchdown. John Nimmo lofted a perfect pass down the right side that James Hanna dropped for a sure score with just more than 13 1/2 minutes to go.

The Aggies finally got their offense back on track on the ensuing possession and pushed their lead back to nine with 11:36 to go.

Gray ran left, slashed back to his right and spun through two attempted tackles to reach the end zone from 23 yards out to finish off a six-play drive.

O'Hara badly missed a 36-yard field goal try on the next Sooners possession, proving costly when the Aggies struck again on their next touch.

Tannehill found a wide open Swope at the Sooners' 40, and Swope went the rest of the way untouched for a 64-yard catch-and-run that made it 33-17 with 7:50 to go in the game.

"It was a typical spacing play actually," Swope said of the long score. "We ran it earlier in the ball game. The safety was really coming down the route and I told Tannehill that the safety was really biting. We both were on the same page and we came back to it a second time and it popped wide open. He made a great throw and he got great protection. It really worked out for us."

On its next possession. OU got to the Aggies' one-yard line on a four-yard gain by Murray, but Jones was stuffed for no gain on third down and Millard was denied on fourth-and-goal. However, the Sooners blocked the Aggies' ensuing punt out of the end zone for a safety that made it 33-19 with 3 1/2 minutes left.

After the free kick, Oklahoma ventured deep into Aggies territory again and for the third time was denied on fourth-and-goal. Murray reached the two on second down before he was halted for no gain on third down. He took a pitch and ran left but was cut down for a two-yard loss by Miller on the Sooners final offensive play of the game.

The Aggies took over and ran out the final 74 seconds to finish off their first win against a ranked opponent this season in four tries.

A&M's Jeff Fuller made three grabs for 28 yards and tied Martellus Bennett's school record with a catch in his 29th straight game. He is second in Aggies' history with 149 grabs and 2,084 yards...Fuller has recorded 886 receiving yards this year to move past Robert Ferguson (885) to establish the Texas A&M single-season record...Tannehill ran 12 times for 24 yards and Swope added 12 yards on a lone carry...Broyles had 59 yards receiving...Oklahoma's Kenny Stills made six grabs for 77 yards, while Franks hauled in eight catches for 66 yards...Jones has completed at least half of his passes 20 of his 21 career games...Murray's touchdown was his school-record 61st...Hanna had caught a TD pass in each of the last four games...Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 18-11, but is just 4-6 at College Station... The Sooners are 19-15 on the road since the start of the 2006 season while winning all 30 of their home games during that stretch...Tannehill was intercepted twice overall.
