No. 6 Wisconsin romps over Indiana
Nov 14, 2010 - 1:57 AMVideo
Ball finished with 167 yards on 22 carries and James White added two rushing scores for the Badgers (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten), who have won five games in a row since suffering their lone loss of the season at Michigan State on October 2. Clay missed Saturday's contest with a sprained knee.
Scott Tolzien completed 15-of-18 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns for Wisconsin, which has won the last six meetings with the Hoosiers.
Wisconsin scored on all 13 of its offensive possessions, never punting and committing no turnovers. The 83 points were the most for the Badgers since defeating Marquette, 85-0, on October 8, 1915, and tied Ohio State's 83-21 win over Iowa on October 28, 1950 for most points scored by a Big Ten team in a conference game.
"It was just kind of the way things happened," Badgers head coach Bret Bielema said when asked if he tried to run up the score to influence the polls. "I don't think Wisconsin will ever get accused of trying to be sexy or (get) style points."
Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell threw for 63 yards and one touchdown before leaving in the second quarter with a hip injury.
The Hoosiers (4-6, 0-6) were dealt a fourth straight loss.
Indiana kept pace with Wisconsin early in the contest, tying the game on Chappell's two-yard TD pass to Tandon Doss after Ball opening the scoring with a one-yard plunge.
Philip Welch made a 32-yard field goal to give the Badgers a 10-7 lead with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. Mitch Ewald then countered for the Hoosiers, converting 48-yard kick with less than a minute gone in the second stanza.
The game quickly turned into a rout, with the Badgers building a 38-10 halftime lead on a pair of touchdown runs from Ball, another by White and a four-yard scoring play between Tolzien and Nick Toon.
Wisconsin continued to pile up the points in the third quarter, as Tolzien hooked up with Jake Byrne for a two-yard touchdown and White recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game.
After Ewald kicked a 33-yard field goal, the Badgers extended their lead to 59-13 on an 11-yard TD pass from Tolzien to Lance Kendricks with 2:07 left in the period.
Wisconsin showed no signs of letting up in the fourth quarter. Welch converted a 41-yard field goal, Badgers defensive back Aaron Henry returned a Dusty Kiel interception 37 yards to the end zone and Jared Abbrederis hauled in a 74-yard TD pass from Jon Budmayr.
Edward Wright-Baker threw a 62-yard TD pass to Duwyce Wilson for the Hoosiers, then Wisconsin's Nate Tice ran for a 17-yard touchdown to finish the scoring.
"We got beat every way possible by a great football team," Indiana head coach Bill Lynch said bluntly.
