Oklahoma State gets first 10-win regular season
Nov 21, 2010 - 5:58 AM Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Brandon Weeden threw three touchdowns passes and the 12th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys clinched at least a share of their first-ever Big 12 South Division title with a 48-14 win over the Kansas Jayhawks.Weeden connected on 31-of-43 passes for 389 yards for the Cowboys (10-1, 6-1 Big 12), who recorded 10 wins during the regular season for the first time in school history.
It was their fourth 10-win season overall and first since 1988.
"It was in the back of our minds. When we were in the huddle, I told the guys about it, that we have a chance to make history. The offensive linemen had no idea, other guys had it in the back of their mind," Weeden said.
Justin Blackmon caught 10 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown and Josh Cooper hauled in seven passes for 94 yards and a score for Oklahoma State, which closes out the regular season against Oklahoma next Saturday.
Oklahoma State leads both Oklahoma and Texas A&M by one game in the Big 12 South.
Kendall Hunter carried the ball 22 times for 105 yards, while Jeremy Smith and Joseph Randle both recorded rushing touchdowns.
Quinn Mecham completed 13-of-23 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown for the Jayhawks (3-8, 1-6), who suffered their 15th loss in their last 18 games after winning five straight to open 2009.
James Sims carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards and a score in defeat.
"With a team like Oklahoma State, your offense is going to have to score some touchdowns," Kansas head coach Turner Gill said. "We had opportunities to do that in the first half and in the third quarter, but we could never capitalize on it and we couldn't maintain anything on the drive offensively; and of course that hurts the defense when they are on the field for quite a long time."
Tim Biere caught a 12-yard TD pass just seven plays into the game to give Kansas an early 7-0 lead. Oklahoma State, though, responded with a Randle 14- yard rushing touchdown to tie things up.
After forcing the Jayhawks to punt, the Cowboys got a 32-yard field goal from Dan Bailey to make it 10-7 with four minutes left in the first quarter.
Kansas fired right back with a seven-play, 77-yard drive that Sims ended with a 24-yard rushing TD for a 14-10 edge.
The back-and-forth battle continued when Cooper caught a 21-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the second stanza for a 17-14 Oklahoma State lead.
A goal-line stand by the Cowboys led to a 15-play, 96-yard drive that was capped by Bailey's 21-yarder to make it 20-14 with 2:34 left in the half.
The Cowboys nearly made a costly mistake early in the third quarter when they were stopped on 4th-and-1 from their own 38. However, Kansas' Jacob Branstetter had a 47-yard field goal blocked.
Bailey followed with a missed 46-yarder to keep it a six-point game. After the Jayhawks went three-and-out, Oklahoma State put together a six-play, 73-yard drive. Isaiah Anderson caught a 35-yard pass on the first play to set up the Cowboys in Kansas territory. Smith capped the march with a five-yard rushing touchdown to make it 27-14 with 6:16 to go in the third quarter.
Following Bailey's missed 50-yarder, Michael Harrison blocked Alonso Rojas' punt and returned it five yards for a touchdown and 34-14 lead with 1:43 remaining.
Blackmon caught a 13-yard TD pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to essentially put the game out of reach.
Tracy Moore caught a three-yard touchdown pass later in the frame to account for the final score.
