No. 15 Missouri shuts down Iowa State
Nov 21, 2010 - 7:26 AM Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Blaine Gabbert threw for 172 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-26 passing and De'Vion Moore rushed for a score as the 15th- ranked Missouri Tigers topped the Iowa State Cyclones, 14-0, at Jack Trice Stadium.Moore rushed for 32 yards on 10 carries and Michael Egnew caught seven passes for 77 yards and a score for the Tigers (9-2, 5-2 Big 12), who have now won two straight since back-to-back losses at Nebraska and Texas Tech.
Jerome Tiller threw for 155 yards on 13-of-31 passing in his first start of the season for the Cyclones (5-7, 3-5), who lost quarterback Austen Arnaud to a career-ending knee injury against Colorado last week.
Alexander Robinson rushed for 98 yards on 25 carries and kicker Grant Mahoney missed two field goals in the loss. Iowa State needed the win to become bowl eligible.
After the teams traded punts to open up the game, Mahoney attempted to conclude a 10-play drive with a 38-yard field goal with just over five minutes left in the first, but the kick went wide left.
Gabbert connected with Egnew eight plays later for an 11-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone with 1:40 left in the quarter, capping an 80-yard drive.
Both team's offenses went stagnant in the second quarter and Missouri kept the 7-0 advantage heading to the half.
Mahoney had another chance to get the Cyclones on the board with 5 1/2 minutes left in the third, but once again the kick went wide left, this time from 27- yards out.
"We can't have mistakes like we did against the 15th-ranked team in the country," Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. "As we build this program, those are the kinds of things that we will correct."
Just as they did in the first quarter, the Tigers used the opportunity to get into the end zone. Gabbert led Missouri on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that extended into the opening minute of the fourth and was capped with a Moore one-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0.
Iowa State failed to extend a drive into the red zone for the remainder of the game.
