Freshman James comes up big again as Miami beats North Carolina

Oct 7, 2006 - 9:20 PM MIAMI, Florida (Ticker) -- It would appear that true freshman Javarris James is now firmly entrenched as Miami's starting running back.

James turned in another big performance and the Hurricanes established a season high for points against a Division I-A team in a 27-7 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina.

In his first career start last week, James rushed for 148 yards and a TD in a 14-13 victory over previously unbeaten Houston. On Saturday, he finished with 111 yards on 16 rushes, including a 62-yard TD run that gave Miami (3-2, 1-1 ACC Coastal) a 24-7 lead with 9:27 left in the third quarter.

Miami scored 51 points in a win over Division I-AA Florida A&M but had not scored more than 14 against anyone else until this one.

Jon Peattie kicked field goals of 39 and 40 yards, Charlie Jones ran for a one-yard TD and safety Lovon Ponder threw a 37-yard TD pass for the Hurricanes.

Ronnie McGill scored on a two-yard run for North Carolina (1-4, 0-3 Coastal) in the second quarter to make it 10-7.
