Glenn scores twice to lift Nebraska over Iowa State

Oct 8, 2006 - 3:46 AM AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- The combination of sophomore Cody Glenn and junior Brandon Jackson were enough to give senior Zac Taylor's arm a rest.

Glenn rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns and Jackson added 116 and a score as 22nd-ranked Nebraska snapped a two-game skid here with a 28-14 victory over Iowa State in a Big 12 Conference matchup.

A week ago in a 39-32 overtime win over Kansas, Taylor threw for a season-high 395 yards and four TDs while Jackson and Glenn combined for 61 yards on 11 carries. But in this one, Taylor finished with 131 yards and a touchdown as his teammates out of the backfield anchored the Cornhuskers' offense.

"We wanted to run the ball tonight and the opening drive set the tone for us," Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said. "We stalled a little bit in the third quarter. I was really proud of our two backs, Jackson and Glenn. To get two guys over 100 yards rushing is quite an accomplishment. The offensive line played great. We were more physical between the tackles."

Glenn highlighted a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 36-yard gain and capped the march with a three-yard score for a 7-0 lead with 9:33 left in the opening frame.

After Bret Meyer drew the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2 Big 12 North) even just 50 seconds into the second quarter, Jackson put Nebraska (5-1, 2-0 North) in front for good with a one-yard TD six minutes later.

"I felt great," Jackson said. "All the credit goes to the offensive linemen. They had a great game."

Taylor, who completed 17-of-21 passes for 130 yards, made it 21-7 by hooking up with Maurice Purify from 27 yards out three seconds before halftime.

"It really gave us momentum and it was a huge play in the game," Callahan said. "It was an excellent pass and read by Zac. He found what the defense was giving us and made it work. It was just an all-around well-executed play."

Taylor felt the score led to the Cyclones' demise.

"We got the touchdown a couple seconds before the half ended and it really put the dagger in them."

Glenn, who had 19 carries, broke multiple tackles en route to his second trip to the end zone for a 21-point cushion with 1:33 left in the contest.

Meyer threw for 263 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-38 attempts for Iowa State.

"We had some chances but weren't able to capitalize on them and Nebraska deserves credit for that," Cyclones coach Dan McCarney said. "They're a real talented team and showed why they deserve to be nationally ranked. They have four running backs that are physical and showed a lot of speed."

Iowa State appeared to cut the deficit to 21-14 on two different occasions in the second half, but came away with nothing.

First, Todd Blythe's catch in the end zone was nullified when he was called for offensive pass interference. After recovering a fumble by Taylor on the Cornhuskers 14, the Cyclones were denied a touchdown when the officials mistakenly ruled Austin Flynn's reception out of bounds.
