Newton leads South Carolina past Kentucky

Oct 8, 2006 - 3:57 AM LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Syvelle Newton beat Kentucky with his arm, hands and legs.

Newton passed for 171 yards, ran for a touchdown and caught another to lead South Carolina to a 24-17 Southeastern Conference triumph over Kentucky.

It was the third victory in the last four games for the Gamecocks (4-2, 2-2 SEC East), who have won their last four conference road contests.

Newton, who has started at quarterback since South Carolina's third game this season, looked impressive in this one, completing 14-of-22 attempts and running for 77 yards on 14 carries.

The senior capped South Carolina's scoring with 4:42 remaining, catching a 22-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Kenny McKinley to push the lead to 24-10.

Cory Boyd ran for 113 yards and a TD on 25 carries and hauled in four receptions for 61 yards for the Gamecocks, who converted 7-of-13 third downs en route to their seventh straight win against the Wildcats.

Andre' Woodson went 18-for-31 for 289 yards, a TD and an interception for Kentucky (3-3, 1-2 East), which came up empty on its last-second drive.
