Weeden passes Cowboys over Wildcats

Sep 9, 2011 - 5:08 AM Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - The last time Oklahoma State and Arizona met, the Cowboys ran all over the Wildcats. Same story Thursday night.

Brandon Weeden broke his own school record for completions in a game and threw for 397 yards and two scores, as ninth-ranked Oklahoma State came away with a 37-14 win over Arizona.

Joseph Randle had a huge night, rushing 15 times for 121 yards and two scores. The sophomore running back also had nine catches for 99 yards. Justin Blackmon caught 12 balls for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Cowboys (2-0), who opened their season on Saturday with a 61-34 thrashing of Louisiana.

Thursday's game was a rematch of the 2010 Alamo Bowl, won by the Cowboys, 36-10. In that contest Weeden passed for 240 yards. He was awesome on Thursday, going 42-for-53 through the air. He had 34 in a contest last year vs. Baylor, which was a school record.

"He's pretty amazing," Arizona coach Bob Stoops said of Weeden. "He threw the ball on some third downs through some pretty tight windows. He's pretty special."

Nick Foles connected on 37-of-51 passes for 398 yards and a TD for the Wildcats (1-1), who were coming off a 41-10 thrashing of Northern Arizona on Saturday.

The Wildcats were held to 41 yards rushing, 22 of which came from Keola Antolin.

"You've got to be able to run the ball," Foles said. "We have running backs capable. We're very capable of running the ball. We're going to figure it out. We're going to figure out how to run the ball. This was a good test and Oklahoma State's a good team, but I have confidence in my guys."

Oklahoma State, which rolled up 594 yards of offense, scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions. Randle plunged in from the one early in the first to cap an 88-yard march. Weeden found Blackmon on a fade pattern to the back right corner of the end zone late in the first and Randle surged up the middle for a four-yard TD run 1 1/2 minutes into the second for a big 21-0 cushion.

The Wildcats moved the ball 75 yards to the OSU five later in the quarter, but Foles' pass to David Douglas on fourth down was unsuccessful. The Wildcats fumbled the ball away later in the stanza.

"I was proud of our guys for the fourth down stop," Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said. "Sometimes that's part of it. You can give a little bit. We have to improve on our offense. We're not the finished product by any means."

Quinn Sharp missed a 42-yard field goal try for the Cowboys on the final play of the half.

Antolin scored on a one-yard run midway through the third, and Arizona's defense came up big on the next possession when Weeden was picked off by Mark Watley at the five-yard line.

Pinned deep in their own territory, the Wildcats were forced to punt, and the Cowboys took advantage of great field position with Weeden throwing eight yards to Blackmon for a 27-7 lead, as Sharp's kick try failed.

"Weeden just throws a good ball," Blackmon said. "He knows where to put it where the defender can't get to it and only the receiver can catch the ball. He has a good way of throwing that ball."

Jeremy Smith scored on a six-yard run, just after Randle caught a 63-yard pass, early in the fourth.

Dan Buckner caught a 54-yard scoring pass for the Wildcats before Sharp connected on an 18-yard field goal to cap the scoring.

Game Notes

The Wildcats played without Juron Criner, the leading receiver from Arizona's conference last year. He sat out after having his appendix removed earlier this week...Buckner had 10 grabs for 142 yards, while Austin Hill ended with eight receptions for 128 yards in defeat...Oklahoma State holds a 5-3 series advantage over the Wildcats...Weeden also broke the school record for pass attempts in a game...Weeden now has 5,309 passing yards in his career, becoming just the fourth Cowboy quarterback to pass for more than 5,000 yards.
