Wilson, No. 8 Wisconsin shut down Beavers

Sep 11, 2011 - 12:07 AM Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Russell Wilson passed for 189 yards and three touchdowns as No. 8 Wisconsin shut down Oregon State, 35-0, at Camp Randall Stadium.

Montee Ball posted 118 yards and two rushing scores for the Badgers (2-0), who travel to Northern Illinois next Saturday.

"I really like the way the game flowed today. I thought our defense, obviously with the shutout, did a nice job," said Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema. "I think they made some adjustments from last week to this week. One of our goals was to be the most improved football teams in the country and hopefully we were able to do that."

Jacob Pederson finished with six catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns as Wisconsin posted its first shutout in nearly two years. Nick Toon added seven grabs for 69 yards and one TD.

Sean Mannion completed 25-of-38 passes for 244 yards but was sacked three times for the Beavers (0-2), who have a bye week before opening their Pac-12 slate on September 24 against UCLA.

Jordan Bishop contributed 98 yards on five receptions in a losing effort.

Early in the opening quarter, a shanked punt by Oregon State's Johnny Hekker set up Wisconsin on the Beavers' 14-yard line. After two rushes for negative yardage followed, Wilson found Pedersen in the end zone for a 17-yard strike.

Toon made a leaping grab in the back-left corner of the end zone to cap an eight-play drive midway through the second quarter for a 14-0 game, and Wilson hit Pedersen again inside the final 30 seconds of the half on a six-yard pass.

On the opening possession of the third quarter, Wisconsin took a 28-0 edge after a 19-yard run from Ball which capped an 80-yard drive.

Late in the third, OSU was stopped on a 4th-and-2 from its own 44, and the Badgers marched 43 yards, taking a 35-0 lead on Ball's one-yard plunge on the first play of the fourth.

"We never did really offensively do anything," said Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. "That was probably the difference, and then we just made it easier for them by messing up on special teams. We shanked a punt and then they got a touchdown."
