Hokies use ground game to hold off East Carolina
Sep 10, 2011 - 11:58 PM Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Josh Oglesby's touchdown midway through the fourth quarter was the difference as No. 11 Virginia Tech bested East Carolina, 17-10, at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.Logan Thomas was just 8-of-20 for 91 yards and an interception, but his performance was mitigated by David Wilson's 138 yards rushing as the Hokies (2-0) rewarded head coach Frank Beamer with his 200th victory in Blacksburg.
"It feels great, I'm grateful to Virginia Tech and all the people who have helped me here," Beamer said following the game. "I've just been a fortunate guy, because it's hard to stay in one place very long anymore."
Oglesby finished with 43 yards and two scores, but the Virginia Tech defense did its part by holding ECU to minus-15 yards on the ground.
Dominique Davis went 20-of-38 for 127 yards but was sacked five times and was picked off once for the Pirates (0-2), who face a bye week before starting their Conference USA slate by hosting Alabama-Birmingham on September 24.
The Hokies took a 17-10 lead with 7:30 left in the contest, when Oglesby's 10- yard run capped an 89-yard drive executed in 13 plays.
ECU went three-and-out on its following series, as did the Hokies, and the home squad took up residence at their own 34 with 3:32 remaining. Davis hit Michael Bowman for 19 yards on a 3rd-and-12 to get into Virginia Tech territory, but Davis was sacked then threw two incompletions.
Facing a 4th-and-18 from their own 43 with 2:04 remaining, Davis overthrew his receiver by several yards. VaTech ran out the remaining time by running three plays.
The lone score of the first quarter came on Michael Dobson's two-yard run with 8:51 to play. Cody Journell missed a 30-yard attempt on Tech's ensuing possession.
A 54-yard attempt from Mike Barbour midway through the second quarter had the distance but hit the bottom of the right upright, and Journell connected on a 39-yarder with less than a minute remaining in the half.
Oglesby's one-yard plunge in the third quarter put the cap on a 78-yard drive and gave Virginia Tech a 10-7 edge, then a 48-yarder by Barbour tied the game heading to the fourth.
