No. 1 Oklahoma rallies to take down Missouri
Sep 25, 2011 - 6:49 AM Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles hooked up for three touchdowns, and top-ranked Oklahoma overcame a slow start to top Missouri, 38-28, in the Big 12 opener for both programs.Jones finished with 448 yards and two interceptions on 35-of-48 throws, with Broyles hauling in 13 passes for 154 yards for the Sooners (3-0, 1-0 Big 12), who trailed 14-3 before taking control with 28 straight points.
Dominique Whaley totaled 150 yards from scrimmage with a TD as Oklahoma ran its home winning streak to 38 games.
James Franklin led Missouri (2-2, 0-1) with 291 yards and one touchdown on 16- of-33 throws, while adding 103 yards and two scores on the ground.
The Tigers upended Oklahoma last year and appeared poised for another upset by jumping out to a two-score lead. Franklin powered in from a yard out early on, then found L'Damian Washington for a 45-yard scoring strike with six minutes left in the opening quarter.
Mike Hunnicutt kicked a 26-yard field goal between the two scores. Later in the opening period, Jones went 5-for-5 on an 80-yard drive that ended in Broyles' 24-yard touchdown, which was reviewed to confirm the wideout had possession before landing out of bounds.
The Sooners started gaining momentum midway through the second behind an 10-play, 80-yard march, fittingly ending with Broyles hauling in a four- yard TD.
Missouri quickly went three-and-out, and it took just 1:18 for the Sooners to move into scoring position again. This time, Jones took it himself, powering in with one-yard sneak to give the hosts a 24-14 lead at the break.
"We jumped on them early a little bit, and they reacted like you know real good teams do," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said.
Whaley went in from three yards out for the only score in the third.
Henry Josey cut into the deficit when he took an option pitch to the left and went up the sideline for a 48-yard TD with 6:44 remaining.
Bob Stoops, who signed a contract extension earlier in the week following a victory over nationally-ranked Florida State, opted not to play conservatively and threw four times on the ensuing drive. The last toss was Jones finding Broyles in the back of the end zone for a game-sealing four-yard score.
"No one was panicked. I thought we'd settle in and play better and we did. It was just methodically getting down and back to business," Stoops said.
Franklin's one-yard TD run in the final minute simply made the final score closer than it was.
Game Notes
The Tigers have lost 18 straight at Owen Field and haven't won there since 1966...The combined total offensive output of 1,125 yards was the most ever in the 96-game series between the Sooners and Tigers...Josey logged 133 yards on 14 carries, while T.J.
