Boise State remains dominant at home, downs Nevada
Oct 2, 2011 - 1:01 AM Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns while Doug Martin ran for two scores, leading fourth-ranked Boise State in a 30-10 defeat of Nevada.Moore completed 19-of-33 passes and was intercepted twice, but the turnovers didn't end up costing the Broncos (4-0), who held the Wolf Pack to 182 total yards and off the board until the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Martin finished with 126 yards on the ground to help Boise State extend its home winning streak to 34 games.
"Extremely happy with how good our defense played," said Boise State head coach Chris Petersen. "To hold these guys to three points late into the fourth quarter, I don't think anybody thought that would happen."
Nevada starting quarterback Tyler Lantrip completed only 5-of-16 passes for 50 yards with an interception. Sophomore Mason Magleby led the Wolf Pack (1-3) to a touchdown in the final minute, when it was far too late for them to avoid a second straight loss.
Boise State drew out its lead gradually. Moore's 21-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Harper midway through the first quarter put the Broncos on the scoreboard, and they had a chance to tack on more points when J.C. Percy intercepted Lantrip deep in Nevada territory early in the second quarter.
The opportunity was ruined when Moore was picked off by Jeremiah Green, but the Broncos' defense forced Nevada into a three-and-out. Moore was intercepted again on Boise State's next possession, but again Nevada didn't pick up a first down.
Boise State didn't waste its next chance. Moore's passing and Martin's running led the Broncos to a 1st-and-goal at the four. Martin ran for a yard, and two plays later Moore found Matt Miller for a score with 5:51 left in the half.
After Nevada punted, the Broncos added on another touchdown -- this time a five-yard Martin run with 1:24 remaining. The failed two-point conversion held the Broncos to a 20-0 lead at the break.
Boise State extended its lead to 27 on the opening possession of the third quarter -- a four-play march capped by Martin's 43-yard run.
Dan Goodale added a 31-yard field goal on the Broncos' next touch, and Nevada never caught up. The Wolf Pack struggled offensively the whole game, converting only 2-of-14 third downs and not exceeding six plays on any of their first 11 drives.
"The offense was horrific," said Nevada head coach Chris Ault. "I thought our defense played hard all game but our offense put our defense in a hole that whole first half. Our defense never had a chance."
When Nevada finally broke through, 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, it was a 10-play, 81-yard march that didn't end up in the end zone. The Wolf Pack reached the Boise State four-yard line, but consecutive incompletions led to a 21-yard Allen Hardison field goal.
Magleby took over on Nevada's next possession, which ended in a punt. But he did lead the visitors to their only touchdown -- a 53-yard strike to Rishard Matthews with 46 seconds to go.
