Longhorns rout Cyclones

Oct 2, 2011 - 4:08 AM Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Case McCoy and David Ash combined to throw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, leading 17th-ranked Texas to a 37-14 victory over Iowa State in their Big 12 opener.

Both quarterbacks completed 7-of-12 passes for the Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 Big 12), while Ash threw for both scores. Jaxon Shipley had six receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown in the lopsided victory.

Josh Turner returned a blocked punt for a touchdown for Texas, while Justin Tucker kicked three field goals.

Steele Jantz threw for 251 yards and a score, with one interception, for the Cyclones (3-1, 0-1), who won their first three games by a combined eight points.

"We can't play like we did to start this game and win a game against the 17th- ranked team in the country," said Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads. "We had too many turnovers and we'll have to work on that with ball control drills this week."

Both teams were coming off an idle week, but Texas raced out to a big lead, scoring 34 points in the first half.

Tucker drilled a 33-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, and Texas had a chance to expand its lead when Tevin Jackson recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff return.

The Longhorns took over at the Iowa State 29 and made the most of the opportunity. Foswhitt Whittaker caught a six-yard pass to convert a third down and ran it into the end zone from 16 yards out on the next play.

Tucker's 35-yarder on Texas' next possession made it a 13-0 game after one quarter.

The Longhorns' first drive of the second quarter resulted in another score -- this time Ash's 48-yard strike to Mike Davis. It was Ash's first career touchdown pass.

Turner's 34-yard return of a blocked punt with 4:30 left made it 27-0, and Texas' final score of the half came with a little more than a minute to go.

The Longhorns moved to the Iowa State 40 and faced third down before Ash found Shipley for a touchdown.

The Texas defense held the Cyclones scoreless in the third quarter, and Iowa State faced too big a deficit to erase in the fourth. James White's two-yard run with 11:33 left ended a 16-play, 86-yard drive to get the Cyclones on the board, and Jantz hit Chris Young with an 18-yard TD pass with 3:50 to go.

That score came after Tucker made a 29-yard kick.
