Marshall paces Sun Devils over Beavers
Oct 2, 2011 - 7:33 AM Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Cameron Marshall rushed for two touchdowns in the second half to lift the 25th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils over the Oregon State Beavers, 35-20, in a Pac-12 battle.Marshall carried the ball 14 times for 80 yards for the Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12), who have won two in a row since a loss to Illinois on September 17.
Brock Osweiler completed 24-of-37 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for Arizona State.
Gerell Robinson caught two passes for 68 yards and a score. A.J. Pickens hauled in three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Sean Mannion connected on 40-of-66 passes for 341 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions for the Beavers (0-4, 0-2), who are off to an 0-4 start for the first time since 1996.
Markus Wheaton caught 11 passes for 116 yards for Oregon State, which has lost six in a row dating back to last season. Terron Ward carried the ball five times for 30 yards.
The Beavers raced out to a 13-0 lead. Osweiler's third pass of the game was intercepted by Jordan Poyer at midfield. Oregon State moved the ball to the ASU 17, but settled for a 34-yard Trevor Romaine field goal.
Osweiler fumbled on the Sun Devils' ensuing possession, and the Beavers recovered the ball at the 25. Oregon State failed to score a touchdown again, with Romaine making a 21-yarder for a 6-0 edge.
Things continued to get worse for Osweiler on ASU's ensuing drive. Poyer stepped in front of another Osweiler pass at the Oregon State 29.
The Beavers finally found the end zone early in the second quarter on Ward's 10-yard score.
"We just couldn't get rolling. I was making some bad errors," Osweiler said. "Oregon State schemed us pretty well and at times it seemed as if they almost knew exactly what was coming, so that's a credit to them. I was just making errors that I can't make. Thankfully we got the win tonight. It shows a lot of character for what this team fought through tonight."
Arizona State responded with three touchdowns before the half. Pickens got the surge started with a 17-yard TD catch. Robinson added a 24-yard touchdown grab to give the Sun Devils a 14-13 lead with eight minutes to go.
After the Beavers went three-and-out, Jamal Miles returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown.
Each team missed a field goal before the break, keeping ASU in front by eight, 21-13.
The Oregon State defense stepped up again early in the third period. Osweiler was intercepted by Anthony Watkins, who returned the ball 40 yards to the 11- yard line.
Mannion faked a handoff and rolled to his right before hitting James Rodgers in the end zone for a five-yard score. The extra point cut the gap to 21-20 with under nine minutes left.
But an amazing Marshall touchdown run on the ensuing possession gave the Sun Devils some breathing room. Marshall broke multiple tackles and sprinted 37 yards into the end zone for a 28-20 lead with under 6 1/2 minutes to go.
Marshall added an eight-yard TD run early in the fourth to give ASU a 35-20 margin.
"It's tough. I mean, any time you really feel like you can really win a game and it comes down to a few plays and you end up losing, it's tough," Poyer said. "There are not really any words to pretty it up. A loss is a loss, and we are going to see what we can do from here."
