Boise State routs Colorado State in MWC opener

Oct 16, 2011 - 5:30 AM Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns, while Doug Martin ran for 200 yards and three scores, as the fifth-ranked Boise State Broncos routed the Colorado State Rams, 63-13.

Tyler Shoemaker had 180 yards receiving and two touchdowns for Boise State (6-0, 1-0 Mountain West), which is off to its fourth consecutive 6-0 start.

D.J. Harper added 63 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Drew Wright had 79 yards on 16 carries.

"When we get a run game going, we know we are going to be a tough offense to stop," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "We ran the ball well and that allowed Kellen to have bigger pass lanes."

Pete Thomas was just 10-of-24 for 100 yards and an interception for the Rams (3-3, 1-1), who've lost three of four after opening the season with consecutive wins.

Chris Nwoke had 74 yards on 15 carries for Colorado State, while Matt Yemm and Joe Brown hauled in the two Ram touchdowns.

"It doesn't take a genius to know we got out coached, out played. They out classed us in every phase of the game today," CSU coach Steve Fairchild said. "They deserve the win. That is a very good football team; we didn't rise up to the occasion."

Martin finished off Boise State's opening seven-play drive with a 26-yard touchdown run up the middle to give the Broncos a quick 7-0 advantage.

After a Colorado State three-and-out, Martin struck again, this time with a 65-yard scamper to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead.

Shoemaker hauled in a 52-yard touchdown on the first play of Boise State's fourth possession, and Harper ran for a 36-yard score on the Broncos next drive as they took a 28-0 lead early on in the second quarter.

After another Rams three-and-out, Moore threw his second touchdown pass of the game as he found Kirby Moore from nine yards out.

Colorado State finally got on the board with 9:44 remaining in the second quarter when Crockett Gillmore connected with Brown for a 27-yard score. Gillmore took a quick-screen pass from Thomas from behind the line of scrimmage, and found Brown streaking down the field for the score. The extra point was blocked.

The Broncos marched to the Rams 15-yard line on their ensuing possession, but Momo Thomas forced a Mitch Burroughs fumble at the 14.

The Rams turned the turnover into points as Yemm hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Charles Lovett on another trick play as Colorado State made it a 35-13 game at the half.

Boise State poured it on in the second half with a 14-yard touchdown run by Martin, a 62-yard score by Shoemaker, a three-yard touchdown reception by Gabe Linehan and a Harper one-yard rushing score to make it 63-13 with 4:41 remaining in the third quarter.
