Kansas State escapes Lubbock unbeaten
Oct 16, 2011 - 4:33 AM Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Collin Klein threw for 146 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 110 yards and three scores as the No. 17 Kansas State Wildcats took a 41-34 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.John Hubert added 76 yards on 19 carries for Kansas State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), which is 6-0 for the first time since 2000 and improved to 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since the 1999 season.
Seth Doege completed 43-of-63 passes for 461 yards and a touchdown, but tossed three interceptions for Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2). The Red Raiders have dropped two straight after a 4-0 start.
Alex Torres caught 12 passes for 104 yards, while Cornelius Douglas hauled in five balls for 99 yards and a score.
"The offense has been good all year long. They've kept us in games, they've won games for us," Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "We got back to our old ways on defense, and put everything on the offensive shoulders. We can't keep doing that."
After a 47-yard field goal by Donnie Carona gave the Red Raiders a 31-27 lead late in the third quarter, Kansas State started a drive at its own 27. Tramaine Thompson's 35-yard grab while falling backwards and a 24-yard rush by Hubert moved the Wildcats into the red zone. Klein finished the drive and the third quarter with a two-yard TD run, giving Kansas State a 34-31 lead.
Tysyn Hartman picked off a Doege pass on the first play of Texas Tech's second possession of the fourth quarter and Kansas State took the ball at the Wildcats' 22-yard line. Kansas State took advantage of the great field position three plays later when Klein ran into the end for the third time of the game.
Doege was picked off deep in his own territory again on the ensuing drive, but Kansas State could not turn the turnover into points as Anthony Cantele missed a 31-yard field goal wide left.
Texas Tech made it a one-score game when Carona connected on a 19-yard field goal with 2:32 left in the fourth and the Red Raiders recovered the onside kick at their own 48 for a chance to tie the game. But they could not get a first down as Doege overthrew his receiver on fourth down and Kansas State ran out the remainder of the clock to seal the win.
Kansas State got on the board on just the third play of the game when Nigel Malone jumped in front of a Doege pass and took it 24 yards for the score.
But after trading punts, Texas Tech was able to tie the game when Doege capped a quick scoring drive by finding Douglas on the left side of the field for a 40-yard touchdown.
The Wildcats were forced to punt again and Texas Tech took over at its own 40. The Red Raiders got two first downs on two plays, but the drive stalled at the Kansas State 31 and Carona's field goal attempt was blocked by Raphael Guidry.
Kansas State couldn't capitalize on the blocked kick and the Red Raiders started a drive at their own 13-yard line. Three Texas Tech first downs placed the ball at the 50 before Tramain Swindall hauled in a 42-yard leaping catch on the final play of the first quarter. Two plays later, DeAndre Washington rushed in for a seven-yard touchdown to cap the 10-play drive and put the Red Raiders ahead.
But Tyler Lockett raced down the middle of the field on the kickoff for a 100- yard score. Cantele missed the extra point attempt, though, to make it a 14-13 game.
"The first crease I saw was in the middle when I was running outside. It was a little bitty hole and I thought I could squeeze through it and I made it," Lockett said about his return.
Texas Tech then orchestrated another long drive deep into K-State territory. They drove from their own 24 down to the Wildcats' 21-yard line, but Carona saw his second field goal attempt blocked by Guidry and Malone returned the ball to Texas Tech's 46.
Klein found Lockett for a sliding 15-yard catch on third down before Klein took a quarterback sneak up the middle from the one-yard line to give the Wildcats a 20-14 lead.
The lead was short lived, however, as Aaron Crawford broke off a 51-yard TD run on the fourth play of Texas Tech's next possession to give the Red Raiders back their one-point advantage.
Kansas State was held to another three-and-out and the Red Raiders extended their lead with a nine-play, 55-yard drive capped by Doege's one-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the half.
The Wildcats took the opening drive of the second half 77 yards down the field for a touchdown. Klein found Travis Tannahill and Chris Harper for big gains before scrambling for 25 yards. On 1st-and-goal at the three, Klein threw a fade to the left corner of the end zone that Harper pulled in for the score, making it a 28-27 game.
