Milestone night for Broyles, as Sooners rout Kansas

Oct 16, 2011 - 6:42 AM Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Ryan Broyles finished with 217 yards receiving and two scores, including a touchdown reception that set an NCAA record, to help No. 3 Oklahoma to a 47-17 rout of Kansas.

Broyles' 57-yard TD catch with 7:50 left in the second quarter was his fourth reception of the game and the 317th of his career, moving him into the all- time lead. Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield recorded 316 from 2001-04.

But Broyles blew past that mark, finishing with 13 catches Saturday. He was the favorite target of Landry Jones, who completed 29-of-48 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.

Dominique Whaley had 165 yards and a score on 30 carries for the Sooners (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), who led by only 10 at halftime, but shut out the Jayhawks in the final two quarters.

"I am really pleased with the run game," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "When we rush for over 200 yards, I know we are doing some good things. The defense had a couple of big plays in the first half and we did not feel like we were that far off from playing well in the first half. Then in the second half we just settled in played like we know how to play."

James Sims and Darrian Miller had rushing touchdowns for Kansas (2-4, 0-3), which managed only six yards of offense in the second half and lost its fourth consecutive game.

The Jayhawks were coming off a 70-28 loss at Oklahoma State and stayed within striking distance of the Sooners throughout the first half. Miller's two-yard touchdown run with just under four minutes left in the second quarter pulled Kansas within 24-17.

But Oklahoma ended the first half with Michael Hunnicutt's 19-yard field goal, the first three of 23 unanswered Sooners points.

"The bottom line is their defensive line, or front seven, beat our front seven," Kansas coach Turner Gill said. "We had a few good things happen for us in the first half, and then they came back and got physical. They were more physical than we were in the second half."

Hunnicutt's 27-yarder with four minutes left in the third provided the only points in a quarter that was otherwise filled with offensive futility. The teams combined to punt the ball five times, and Broyles fumbled in the end zone after securing a 19-yard reception.

But the turnover didn't hurt the Sooners, who dominated the Jayhawks defensively in the second half.

Hunnicutt's 20-yarder on the second play from scrimmage of the fourth quarter made it a 33-17 game, and after Oklahoma held Kansas to a three-and-out, it found the end zone again.

The Sooners started from their own 15-yard line, but Whaley got them across midfield by ripping off four consecutive runs for 42 yards. Two plays later, Jones found Broyles for a 43-yard touchdown.

Jones was intercepted on Oklahoma's next possession, but the Sooners were quickly back in scoring position. Broyles returned a punt 36 yards to the Kansas 36, and Whaley got Oklahoma across the goal line. He ran the ball four times during the drive, including a 10-yard scoring run that completed the blowout.

The game started like a rout, with Oklahoma posting the first 10 points. Jones found Kenny Stills for a 17-yard score on the Sooners' second possession, which started at the Kansas 35 thanks to a 33-yard punt return by Broyles.

Hunnicutt had a 36-yarder with 5:21 left in the first, but Kansas responded with a 56-yard touchdown run by Sims. Alex Mueller's 36-yard field goal shortly into the second quarter tied the game.

Oklahoma went back ahead with touchdowns on its next two touches. Roy Finch had an eight-yard run to cap a nine-play, 70-yard march with a little more than nine minutes left in the half, and Broyles' record-setting catch followed.

He ran past the Kansas defense from the slot on the right side of the field, made the catch near the goal line and easily got into the end zone for the score for a 24-10 lead.
