No. 16 Virginia Tech downs Boston College
Oct 23, 2011 - 1:22 AM Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - David Wilson ran for 134 yards and a score on 17 carries to lift the No. 16 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Boston College Eagles, 30-14."I'm proud of our football team. I thought we hung in there and battled a good football team, a team that came in here and played hard and came off an off week, and they were well-prepared," Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said.
Logan Thomas threw for 268 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-36 passing, and added 60 yards and a score on the ground for Virginia Tech (7-1, 3-1 ACC), which won its third straight since falling to Clemson 23-3.
Danny Coale caught a career-high eight balls for 118 yards, while Marcus Davis added 49 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.
Chase Rettig was 13-of-30 for 181 yards with a touchdown and interception for the Eagles (1-6, 0-4), who dropped their third straight.
Rolandan Finch ran for 92 yards on 18 carries, and added 53 yards receiving. Colin Larmond caught four passes for 69 yards, and Chris Pantale caught Rettig's lone touchdown pass.
Boston College started its first possession in fantastic field position at the Hokie 35-yard line after a nine-yard punt by Michael Branthover. After a loss of two and a 35-yard completion to Larmond, Rettig scored from two yards out to make it 7-0.
After a pair of three-and-outs, the Hokies marched 57 yards on eight plays before Cody Journell booted a 26-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 6:32 to go in the first quarter. Coale had a 19-yard catch, and D.J. Coles added a 28- yard reception to highlight the drive.
Thomas was able to lead a 10-play, 61-yard drive before the half to set up Journell for 36-yard field goal to make it a 7-6 game at halftime.
Virginia Tech's offense woke up in the third quarter.
Wilson concluded Virginia Tech's five-play, 60-yard opening second-half march with a 42-yard score. Wilson carried the ball three times for 50 yards on the possession, after rushing for just 21 yards in the first half.
A Tariq Edwards interception set up the Hokies at their own 11-yard line on their next possession. Coale had a 29-yard reception down the right sideline, and Davis came down with a jump ball in the end zone on the very next play for a 20-yard score to finish off the seven-play, 89-yard drive to make it a 20-7 game.
Thomas capped off a nine-play, 56-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge which made it 27-7 early in the fourth quarter. Coale had a 31-yard reception to highlight the drive.
The Eagles answered with an 11-play, 72-yard march. Pantale hauled in a seven- yard score on a 4th-and-6 to pull BC within 13 with 9:08 left in the game.
Journell connected from 24 yards out to give the Hokies a 30-14 lead with 3:43 to go. The 11-play, 74-yard possession took 5:25 off the clock. Wilson racked up 41 rushing yards on five carries on the drive.
Larmond fumbled on the Eagles' next possession, and Detrick Bonner recovered the ball at the 23-yard line. Virginia Tech ran the final 3:29 off the clock to end the game.

Wilson eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark on the season as he sits at 1,037 yards...The Hokies lead the all-time series 14-6...Jarrett Boykin caught five balls for 46 yards...Branthover averaged just 31 yards a punt.
