Barkley throws 6 TDs as Trojans rout Buffaloes

Nov 5, 2011 - 6:52 AM Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - Matt Barkley set a school record with six touchdown passes and No. 21 USC rebounded from a debilitating loss by blowing out lowly Colorado, 42-17.

Barkley threw for 318 yards on 25-of-39 passes for the Trojans (7-2, 4-2 Pac-12), who were less than a week removed from falling to Stanford in triple overtime.

Robert Woods and Marqise Lee were once again Barkley's top targets, combining for 254 yards and four touchdowns on 18 catches.

"Our receiving core was much better than their secondary," Barkley said. "We were a little off on a couple throws but we were all over the place and I have to thank coach for those calls."

The Buffaloes (1-9, 0-6) have yet to record a Pac-12 victory.

Colorado's Tyler Hansen passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns, including a 37-yard hookup with Toney Clemons on the game's opening possession.

USC countered with a seven-play, 80-yard march that ended with Lee hauling in a 33-yard TD, starting a string of 28 consecutive points by the visitors.

"I felt like the way we came out, we played with good intensity and energy, but they wore us down," Colorado head coach Jon Embree said.

Barkley, rolling to his right, hit Xavier Grimble for a five-yard score on the second play of the second quarter, then found Woods and Lee for touchdowns of 15 and 25 yards, respectively, for a 28-7 cushion.

The only costly mistake Barkley made was an ill-advised pass that Jason Espinoza intercepted just before the half. Colorado settled for a 30-yard field goal by Will Oliver, who had two other attempts blocked.

Late in the third quarter, Barkley again bought time with his legs and found a streaking Woods behind the secondary for a 45-yard scoring strike.

Clemons, who ended with 112 yards on five catches, caught a 10-yard lob in the end zone four minutes into the fourth, but Barkley connected with Amir Carlisle for a 19-yard TD midway through the fourth to secure the school record.
