Hokies top Virginia, eye Clemson in title game

Nov 27, 2011 - 3:37 AM Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - David Wilson exploded for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and Marcus Davis added five receptions for 119 yards and a score, as No. 6 Virginia Tech subdued No. 24 Virginia, 38-0, at Scott Stadium.

Logan Thomas was an effective 13-of-21 for 187 yards and two touchdowns and contributed a rushing touchdown for the Hokies (11-1, 7-1 ACC), who claimed the Coastal Division and will face Atlantic winner Clemson in the conference title game next Saturday.

Jarrett Boykin added a receiving score for Virginia Tech, which notched its first whitewash since a 19-0 decision at Boston College last September 25.

"I'm really proud of our football team. To come in here against a very hot team, and just play as well as we did and take it to them the way we did -- I'm really proud of them," said Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. "I'm proud of what this football program is all about. These kids played the game the right way and I'm really proud of them. (Virginia) has improved but tonight was our night."

Michael Rocco threw for 211 yards on 16-of-27 passing but was intercepted twice and sacked four times for the Cavaliers (8-4, 5-3), whose four-game win streak came to an end.

Kris Burd tallied 100 yards on seven catches, but the Virginia ground attack was held to just 30 yards total.

Tech opened the scoring with an 83-yard drive executed in six plays, ending on a 14-yard run by Thomas.

It was the lone score of the opening quarter, as Virginia was forced to punt twice and turned the ball over on downs after Kevin Parks was held to two yards on 4th-and-3 from the VT seven.

It was 14-0 for the Hokies early in the second as a 96-yard march was capped on a 16-yard connection from Thomas to Boykin. The Cavaliers again failed to make headway, forced to punt twice more and Rocco also lost a fumble after being sacked on the final series of the first half.

Virginia Tech extended its edge on the opening possession of the second half as Wilson ran 27 yards to paydirt.

On drive which bridged the third and fourth quarters, it was a 28-0 margin for the visitors on a 38-yard TD run from Wilson.

Rocco was then picked off by J.R. Collins at the Cavs' 26 and returned the ball to the four. Three plays later, Thomas found Davis for a seven-yard strike.

On Virginia's next series, Dominique Terrell had the ball pulled out by Jayron Hosley and it was recovered at the home team's 20-yard line. Cody Journell capped that series with a 40-yard field goal.

"I thought they did a great job playing defense. It's unfortunate for us because one of the things we pride ourselves on is being able to run the ball," noted Virginia head coach Mike London. "I give them all the credit. They got us in third-and-long situations. You can't let that happen because then you pin your ears back to rush the passer and get pressure on the quarterback. They played like they normally play and we didn't play well enough."

Game Notes

These intrastate rivals have played each other 93 times, and Virginia Tech has claimed 51 games along with three ties...Tech has also won the last eight meetings...For the Hokies, it was their first shutout victory against Virginia since a 17-0 decision on November 25, 2006 and their first whitewash at Charlottesville since a 48-0 win on November 19, 1983...The Cavaliers hadn't been blanked at home since a 55-0 loss to Clemson on September 8, 1984.
