Eddie Robinson back on top of D-I wins list

Jul 23, 2012 - 3:47 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Grambling State's legendary football coach Eddie Robinson is once again the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I football history.

On Monday, the NCAA announced in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal that it had vacated late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno of his wins from the 1998 to 2011 seasons. Paterno previously broke Robinson's record of 408 wins on Oct. 29, 2011, beating Illinois for No. 409. However, a total of 111 wins were stripped from Paterno, thus restoring Robinson to the top of the wins list.

Robinson, who passed away in 2007, led Grambling State for over 50 years. He was hired in 1941 and went on to send hundreds of players to the NFL, including the first player from a historically black college, Paul "Tank" Younger.

Robinson's influence and memory lives on today throughout college football. Last season marked the 25 anniversary of the Eddie Robinson Award which honors the outstanding head coach in the Football Championship Subdivision.
