Stanford destroys Duke
Sep 9, 2012 - 7:12 AM Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Josh Nunes tossed a trio of touchdowns to lead No. 25 Stanford to a 50-13 rout of Duke on Saturday at Stanford Stadium.Nunes, making his second start in the post-Andrew Luck era, went 16-of-30 for 275 yards and an interception for Stanford (2-0), which snuck past San Jose State, 20-17, to open the season.
Stepfan Taylor carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards and a score, while Levine Toilolo, Drew Terrell and Jamal-Rashad Patterson each added a receiving score.
Sean Renfree started for Duke (1-1) and passed for 200 yards and a pair of interceptions on 28-of-40 passing. Backup Anthony Boone added 147 yards and an interception on 13-of-21 passing for the Blue Devils, who defeated FIU last weekend.
Jamison Crowder hauled in 10 passes for 112 yards and Desmond Scott added 11 grabs for 83 yards in the setback.
After a quick three-and-out from Duke on the opening possession of the game, Terrell took the punt and scampered 76 yards into the end zone.
Stanford's defense forced another three-and-out before taking the ball 55 yards on seven plays to set up a 35-yard field goal from Jordan Williamson to press the lead to 10-0.
Williamson added a 32-yarder later in the first to extend the margin to 13-0.
Stanford's first possession of the second quarter produced its first touchdown, as Taylor capped a 7-play, 56-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown surge.
Another Duke three-and-out resulted in another Williamson field goal, this one from 22 yards to press the lead to 23-0.
Ross Martin nailed a 29-yard field goal just before halftime to get Duke on the board as they trailed 23-3 heading into the locker room.
The Blue Devils tried on onside kick to start the second half, but Stanford recovered the ball at Duke's 43-yard line.
Nunes then completed four consecutive passes, the final one coming on a 19- yard touchdown strike to Terrell to make it a 30-3 contest.
After Jordan Richards intercepted Renfree's pass and took it down to the Duke 8, Nunes hit Toilolo two plays later for a 3-yard touchdown pass.
Following a 29-yard field goal from Martin later in the third, the Blue Devils drove into Stanford territory, but Ed Reynolds picked off Renfree and Kyle Olugbode took it 70 yards for a touchdown to extend the margin to 43-6 after the extra point was blocked.
Duke responded with its first touchdown drive of the game, as Boone led the Blue Devils on an 8-play, 82-yard march, capped by Brandon Connette's 4-yard touchdown plunge late in the third.
Stanford answered early in the fourth when Nunes found Patterson for a 27-yard touchdown strike to make it 50-13 and finish off the rout.
