Robinson, No. 17 Michigan rout UMass
Sep 15, 2012 - 11:54 PM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Denard Robinson scored three of Michigan's six first-half touchdowns, as the 17th-ranked Wolverines crushed the Massachusetts Minutemen, 63-13, at Michigan Stadium.Robinson completed 16-of-24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, adding another on the ground as part of a 106-yard, 10-carry effort. Michigan (2-1) continued its dominance over the Mid-American Conference, improving to 31-1 against current MAC teams.
Making the third start of his career, quarterback Mike Wegzyn finished 14- of-29 for 141 yards for Massachusetts (0-3), which has endured a rough ride in its initial FBS campaign.
The Wolverines never trailed in the game, scoring touchdowns on three of their first four possessions. A Devin Funchess 26-yard touchdown catch and rushing scores of 11 and five yards out by Fitzgerald Toussaint and Vincent Smith, respectively, put Michigan up 21-3.
The Minutemen made it a 21-10 game after Christian Birt returned a Robinson interception for a touchdown, but that was the closest they would come the rest of the way.
Michigan responded the following possession. On the fifth play of a 75-yard drive, Robinson connected with Devin Gardner for a 42-yard catch and run score to make it 28-10.
After a 36-yard touchdown scramble from Robinson, Massachusetts added a field goal with just over two minutes to play in the second quarter, but by halftime, Michigan led 42-13. Robinson led a two-minute drill offense down to the 1-yard line of the Minutemen. On a 2nd-and-goal scramble, Robinson fumbled but teammate Taylor Lewan recovered in the end zone to increase the Wolverines' lead to 29.
Toussaint, who had a team-high 15 carries for 85 yards, contributed 24 yards on Michigan's first possession of the second half. His gain of 11 yards put Michigan inside the red zone and set up an 18-yard touchdown strike from Robinson to Roy Roundtree to put the Wolverines up 49-13.
Smith scored his second touchdown of the game near the end of the third quarter when he crossed the goal line from nine yards out to increase Michigan's lead to 43.
Michigan scored its final touchdown after Brian Dowling fumbled a punt on Massachusetts' own 22 yard line. Five plays later, Justice Hayes punched it into the end zone on a one-yard carry.
Game Notes
Massachusetts managed just 15 first downs to Michigan's 27 ... With Robinson's next rushing touchdown, he will become the eighth player in NCAA history to throw for 40 touchdowns and rush for 40 touchdowns ... Saturday's matchup was just the second meeting between UMass and Michigan ... Michigan had 585 yards of total offense, compared to 259 for Massachusetts.
