Franklin sets school record as UCLA crushes Arizona
Nov 4, 2012 - 7:40 AM Pasadena, CA (Sports Network) - Johnathan Franklin became UCLA's career rushing leader Saturday night, as the 25th-ranked Bruins cruised past the 24th-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 66-10.Franklin came into the game needing just 21 yards to pass Gaston Green, who gained 3,731 yards from 1984-87. Franklin became the school's rushing leader with a 37-yard touchdown run on his third carry of the game. He ended the night with 24 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
"It's a great feeling. All praises to my teammates," Franklin said. "They have pushed me every day -- the linemen blocking for me and the receivers working down field. All those guys open up the big holes, and I just run through them. I was just thinking about doing whatever I can to help my team win. That helped contribute to the team."
Brett Hundley completed 23-of-28 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns for the Bruins (7-2, 4-2 Pac-12), who have won three in a row. He also carried the ball 10 times for 16 yards and a score.
Joseph Fauria caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns for UCLA, which sits atop the Pac-12's South Division.
Matt Scott connected on 15-of-25 passes for 124 yards for the Wildcats (5-4, 2-4), who had a brief two-game winning streak snapped. Ka'Deem Carey carried the ball 16 times for 54 yards and a score.
"I'm embarrassed by how we played, and it starts with me as the head coach," Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said. "I thought we were ready to play, but we weren't of course and it starts with me and the staff."
Franklin's 37-yard TD run on the ninth play of the game got UCLA's offense going.
Arizona lost nine yards on its first possession that ended with an 18-yard punt. Hundley then capped a 7-play, 34-yard drive with a 6-yard rushing TD.
After a three-and-out by the Wildcats, the Bruins put together a 14-play, 85- yard scoring drive. On 3rd-and-1 from the Arizona 11, Devin Fuller caught a pass for one yard. A face mask penalty on the Wildcats gave UCLA a first down at the five. A pair of false start penalties set the Bruins back some, but Jordan Payton caught a 17-yard TD pass to make it 21-0.
UCLA was forced to punt the ball early in the second quarter, but Richard Morrison fumbled the ball on the return. The Bruins recovered and Jerry Johnson hauled in a 46-yard pass a few plays later. Damien Thigpen followed with a 1-yard TD run.
Arizona finally got on the board when John Bonano made a 28-yard field goal with 6:47 left in the half.
Franklin's 2-yard TD run and Fauria's 1-yard touchdown catch made it 42-3 at the break.
Ka'imi Fairbairn's 25-yard field goal early in the third made it 45-3. But Carey responded with a 2-yard TD run on Arizona's ensuing possession.
Fauria's 28-yard TD catch with 5:21 left made it a 52-10 contest.
Steven Manfro and Melvin Emesibe each ran for a score in the fourth period.
