Seminoles drop Terrapins, capture ACC Atlantic Division title

Nov 18, 2012 - 12:52 AM College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Devonta Freeman carried the ball 16 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns as the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles clinched the ACC's Atlantic Division title with a 41-14 victory over the Maryland Terrapins.

EJ Manuel completed 17-of-23 passes for 144 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Seminoles (10-1, 7-1 ACC), who captured their second divisional crown in the last three years.

James Wilder Jr. carried the ball eight times for 52 yards and a score for Florida State, which ends the regular season next Saturday against Florida. Rashad Greene and Nick O'Leary each caught a touchdown pass.

Florida State's Dustin Hopkins made two field goals and five extra points to break the NCAA all-time scoring record for a kicker. He came into Saturday's game needing three points to break Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman's (2007-10) record of 439.

Shawn Petty connected on 8-of-19 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns for the Terrapins (4-7, 2-5), who have lost five in a row.

Florida State never looked back after scoring a touchdown on its opening possession of the game.

O'Leary's 15-yard catch on 3rd-and-9 set up the Seminoles at the Maryland 45. Faced with a 3rd-and-1 from the six, Wilder Jr. picked up one yard on the ground and Freeman followed with a 5-yard rushing TD to make it 7-0.

"It was huge. I said that earlier in the week - the fact that it was an away game - we wanted to come in here and get a defining drive early in the game. That was it for us," Manuel said.

Levern Jacobs fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and Florida State recovered the ball at the 10-yard line of the Terrapins. O'Leary hauled in a touchdown pass on the next play to make it a 14-point contest.

The Seminoles got the ball in Maryland territory again after Petty fumbled with over three minutes left in the opening period. However, Florida State had to settle for a 26-yard Hopkins field goal on the second play of the second quarter.

Hopkins added a 40-yarder on Florida State's next possession, making it a 20-0 contest.

It was 27-0 at the half after Greene caught a 30-yard TD pass with 1:32 remaining.

Each team scored a touchdown in the third stanza. Kevin Dorsey caught a 33- yard TD pass for Maryland, while Freeman recorded a 2-yard rushing touchdown for Florida State.

"It's true, a bowl is no longer a possibility, but at the same time we're not giving up and you may have noticed through the entire season, we might not be able to put the first half together, but we always come back that second half," Dorsey said. "That's been a testament to the team. We're not going to give up. Regardless of if we're able to go to a bowl, we're going to go out and try to get a fifth win."

Wilder Jr. and Dorsey each recorded touchdowns in the fourth to close out the scoring.
