Oklahoma squeaks past TCU

Dec 2, 2012 - 4:46 AM Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Oklahoma will have to be happy with a share of the Big 12 title.

Damien Williams ran for 115 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, while Landry Jones threw for 244 yards with a pair of scores as the 12th-ranked Sooners held on for a 24-17 win over TCU.

Oklahoma (10-2, 8-1 Big 12) closed the regular season with its fifth straight win and earned a share of the Big 12 title with Kansas State, which beat Texas later Saturday. The Sooners and Wildcats finished with identical conference records, but Kansas State beat Oklahoma in September and will claim the conference's automatic BCS bowl bid. Oklahoma is still in position to receive an at-large BCS berth.

TCU (7-5, 4-5) was coming off a 20-13 win at Texas on Thanksgiving night, but closed its first season in the Big 12 with a losing conference record. The Horned Frogs were 0-4 in conference play at home.

Trevone Boykin threw for 231 yards with a touchdown and ran for 36 yards with another score for the Horned Frogs, but had the tying touchdown called back by a holding call in the final minute.

TCU pulled within seven with seven minutes to play on a 47-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom, then got the ball back at its own 25 with 2:49 remaining when Oklahoma's Mike Hunnicutt missed a 42-yard field goal attempt.

After a pair of Boykin completions, he hooked up with Cam White for 46 yards to the Oklahoma 12. On third down, Boykin found a seam off the right side of the line and dashed into the end zone, but an obvious holding call negated the score and a fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 25 seconds left.

Boykin completed 17-of-31 passes without an interception and the freshman was just as good as Jones on Saturday. The heralded Oklahoma signal-caller connected on just 22-of-40 throws with an interception.

After a series of punts to start the game, the Sooners marched 56 yards on five plays and took a 7-0 lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Williams in the final minute of the first quarter.

TCU was unable to cross midfield on any of its first six possessions, then took advantage of a big defensive play to tie the game late in the second. Sam Carter picked off Jones near midfield and returned the interception to the Oklahoma six, setting up Boykin's touchdown run on the next play.

The Sooners regained the lead with a 75-yard drive. Jones completed six passes to fuel the series, capping it with a perfect 24-yard TD strike to Jalen Saunders on 3rd-and-23 with 53 seconds remaining in the half.

Oklahoma then needed just four plays to extend the lead on the initial series of the second half, as Williams broke free for a 66-yard touchdown jaunt to make it 21-7. The Frogs used a big play later in the third to make it a one- score game, as Boykin and Brandon Carter combined for an 80-yard touchdown.

A Boykin fumble late in the third set up Hunnicutt's 34-yard field goal to give Oklahoma a 24-14 edge. TCU answered with a lengthy series and had a chance to trim the deficit back to seven early in the fourth, but Oberkrom's 32-yard field goal try appeared to go over the right upright and was called wide right.
