Brawl overshadows Miami rout of Florida International
Oct 15, 2006 - 4:49 AM MIAMI (Ticker) -- In a game marred by one of the worst brawls in college football history, Miami blanked Florida International, 35-0, in a non-conference matchup.Kyle Wright threw three touchdowns for the Hurricanes (4-2), whose reputation took a further hit after the third-quarter incident.
With Miami ahead, 7-0, Wright threw a five-yard touchdown to James Bryant with exactly nine minutes to go in the third quarter. But Bryant drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for bowing after his touchdown, and the Golden Panthers did not take kindly to his antics.
After Jon Peattie converted the extra point, a melee broke out and players from both teams ran onto the field. Hurricanes holder Matt Perrelli was tackled and punched by by FIU safety Chris Smith, while Miami's Anthony Reddick took off his helmet and swung it at one player and fellow safety Brandon Meriweather was seen stomping on another.
A total of 13 players were ejected after order was restored.
"I don't have any idea how it happened, how it started," FIU coach Don Strock said. "It's embarrassing and you have to walk away. Certainly after (the NCAA) watch the film there will be decisions handed down, and we will abide by those."
Wright completed 14-of-22 passes for 117 yards and Lance Leggett had two touchdown catches for the Hurricanes.
