Buckeyes lose Miller, but pound San Diego State
Sep 8, 2013 - 12:23 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Ohio State Buckeyes extended the nation's longest winning streak with ease against San Diego State. The only problem for the third-ranked Buckeyes was star quarterback Braxton Miller missed the majority of Saturday's 42-7 rout with a knee injury.
Miller, a contender for the Heisman Trophy, was injured on Ohio State's first drive of the game while converting a fourth down from the SDSU 12-yard line with his legs. The junior was pinned between tacklers, causing his helmet to pop off. After being taken by cart to the locker room, Miller returned to the sideline by the end of the first quarter wearing a brace on his knee.
His replacement, Kenny Guiton, threw two touchdowns passes to Corey Brown and ran in another for Ohio State (2-0), which has won 14 games in a row. Guiton finished with 152 yards on 19-of-28 passing and 83 on the ground.
"I just do my best to let my voice be heard and impact this team in a positive way," Guiton said.
Quinn Kaehler completed 22-of-36 throws and totaled 216 passing yards for the Aztecs (0-2).
"I thought in the second half the offense showed improvement," said San Diego State head coach Rocky Long. "I thought they were absolutely horrible in the first half. I thought the defense didn't play very well, but they were fighting."
With Guiton in at quarterback, Dontre Wilson ran for a 7-yard touchdown on the next play after Miller exited.
Guiton then hooked up with Brown for a 27-yard scoring strike and handed off to Jordan Hall for another with three seconds remaining in the first.
The Buckeyes increased their advantage to 35-0 in the second quarter on rushing touchdowns by Guiton and Rod Smith, the former for 44 yards and the latter following a Kaehler fumble.
Guiton and Brown hooked up again before the Aztecs finally got on the board with 1:41 to play in the third quarter.
