Hurricanes blow through Savannah State in 70-point rout

Sep 22, 2013 - 4:54 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Gus Edwards totaled 113 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, as No. 16 Miami-Florida used a strong first half to blitz Savannah State, 77-7, in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Dallas Crawford scored twice more on the ground, Duke Johnson added a TD rush and Eduardo Clements finished with 75 yards on 11 attempts for the Hurricanes (3-0), who showed no signs of slowing down two weeks after a narrow win over Florida.

The combined efforts of Stephen Morris, Ryan Williams and Gray Crow under center accounted for 20-of-23 completions for 313 yards and four touchdowns.

Stacey Coley posted a 25-yard TD reception and returned a kick 88 yards for another score, while Allen Hurns, Beau Sandland and Crawford each hauled in a scoring pass for Miami.

"I think we learned about a lot of individuals," Hurricanes head coach Al Golden said. "Ryan Williams stepped up. I thought Gus Edwards stepped up. Beau Sandland stepped up."

DeQuan Daniels exploded for a 75-yard touchdown run for the Tigers (1-3), who have already surrendered 240 points this season, including two defeats where their opponents have topped the 70-point plateau.

Four players attempted at least one pass for Savannah State, with starter Antonio Bostick the best of the bunch with 23 yards and two interceptions on 3-of-11 efficiency.

"I know we had some quirky things happen at the same time we moved the ball at times," Savannah State head coach Earnest Wilson III said. "We exposed them at times. So we've just got to keep working and keep getting better."

Coming off a bye week, the Hurricanes' offense moved at gale force in the opening quarter, going up 21-0 thanks to a 4-yard scoring run from Crawford, an 80-yard connection from Morris to Hurns and a 2-yard TD push from Johnson.

Williams found Crawford for a 5-yard touchdown early in the second and his 25- yard catch-and-run with Coley boosted Miami to a 35-0 edge. The lead ballooned to 49-0 by halftime on scoring runs of 16 yards by Crawford and one yard by Edwards.

In the third quarter, Crow's 13-yard TD strike to Sandland and a 3-yard run to paydirt from Edwards pushed the Hurricanes' lead to 63-0.

Savannah State finally found the scoreboard on the long run from Daniels, but the 'Canes responded twice before the period was through, going up 77-7 on Coley's 88-yard kickoff return plus Edwards' 9-yard scamper to the end zone.
