Manziel, Aggies get right back on track with rout of SMU
Sep 22, 2013 - 4:49 AM College Station, TX (Sports Network) - Texas A&M had a significant drop-off in competition, but the 10th-ranked Aggies experienced no letdown in a 42-13 win over SMU.Coming off last week's tough setback to No. 1 Alabama, quarterback Johnny Manziel ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score while sitting out the majority of the second half on Saturday.
Manziel completed 14-of-21 passes for 244 yards with an interception and added 102 yards rushing for Texas A&M (3-1). Ben Malena carried the ball 13 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
"I thought our guys ran the ball well," said Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. "Played a lot of guys, got some good production out of some of the young guys."
Garrett Gilbert finished with 310 yards, a touchdown and one interception on 37-of-62 passing for the Mustangs (1-2).
"We didn't handle the crowd noise very well," SMU head coach June Jones said. "We had seven or eight offside penalties that set us back. It is frustrating."
The Aggies' first two drives of the game totaled 12 plays and ended with rushing touchdowns by Malena and Manziel. Texas A&M then recovered an onside kick, but Manziel wound up being picked off by Hayden Greenbauer in the red zone.
SMU came away with points following the turnover as Chase Hover kicked a 42- yard field goal with nine seconds to play in the opening quarter.
Texas A&M scored three second-quarter touchdowns and each time failed to convert the extra point. Manziel threw a 16-yard scoring strike to Malcome Kennedy and ran seven yards into the end zone before Deshazor Everett returned a Jeremiah Gaines fumble 12 yards to paydirt.
Taylor Bertolet missed twice on the point-after try and Josh Lambo had his attempt blocked.
Hover drilled a 47-yarder to close out the half, and Manziel led one more drive following the break. Malena capped the 8-play, 78-yard sequence with a short TD run.
Lambo made a 40-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the third quarter before the Mustangs finally reached the end zone on Gilbert's 31-yard connection with Keenan Holman.
