James leads UCLA in rout of New Mexico State
Sep 22, 2013 - 7:12 AM Pasadena, CA (Sports Network) - Jordon James ran for 164 yards and two scores in No. 13 UCLA's 59-13 rout of New Mexico State.Brett Hundley was 23-of-36 passing for 281 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bruins (3-0), who tallied 38 unanswered points in last week's 41-21 win over Nebraska in Lincoln.
"He looked hesitant and he's got to move through that. He had good numbers, but numbers aren't always the true story," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said.
UCLA honored late receiver Nick Pasquale, who was struck and killed by a car two weeks ago, by playing with 10 men on its first offensive series. The crowd wore shirts with Pasquale's No. 36 on them.
Steven Manfro caught a touchdown pass and ran in for a score, while Devin Fuller and Shaquelle Evans each hauled in a TD pass in the triumph.
Brandon Betancourt ran for 95 yards and a touchdown for New Mexico State (0-4), which has dropped 15 consecutive games.
"They're a really good team. They have a lot of talent and a lot of speed," Aggies head coach Doug Martin.
James' 4-yard TD run in the opening frame accounted for the only scoring in the first, but the Bruins' 24-point second turned the game into a rout.
Manfro hauled in a 20-yard score and ran for a 12-yard TD to make it 21-0 midway through the stanza. Ka'imi Fairbairn nailed a 38-yard field goal late in the half and Hundley's 21-yard TD strike to Fuller with 39 ticks to go until intermission gave the hosts a comfortable 31-point cushion at the break.
Hundley flipped a 7-yard TD pass to Evans and following a New Mexico State three-and-out, James ran for 13 and 23 yards before finishing the brisk 3-play sequence with a 19-yard TD run to make it 45-0 late in the third.
Andrew McDonald found Adam Shapiro for a 33-yard score early in the fourth to get the Aggies on the board.
A pair of Malcolm Jones 3-yard TD runs, sandwiched around a Betancourt 4-yard TD plunge, concluded the scoring. Maxwell Johnson missed the extra point on the Aggies' touchdown.
