Hundley helps UCLA cruise past Cal
Oct 13, 2013 - 6:59 AM Pasadena, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of key injuries didn't slow Brett Hundley and No. 11 UCLA down on Saturday.Hundley threw for a career-high 410 yards and tossed three touchdowns in the Bruins' 37-10 thrashing of California.
"Brett (Hundley) threw the ball very well, and that was the third-highest passing game in UCLA history, but he missed some throws," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said.
UCLA lost its starting left tackle Torian White for the season after he suffered a broken bone near his ankle to go along with a slight ligament tear in last Saturday's win over Utah. Running back Jordon James also went down with an ankle injury in that triumph.
Hundley completed 31-of-41 passes for the Bruins (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12), who continued the school's best start since the 2005 squad won their first eight tilts.
"He's a good quarterback and a mobile guy. He does a good job of extending plays and I thought we pressured him pretty well, but unfortunately he broke a tackle or broke containment and when he did that he made plays down the field," Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said of Hundley.
Devin Fuller caught six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown, Thomas Duarte had three receptions for 76 yards and a score and Shaquelle Evans hauled in six balls for 68 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Jared Goff was 26-of-43 for 215 yards and an interception for Cal (1-5, 0-3), which has dropped four straight tilts.
The Bruins stormed out to a 17-0 lead.
Ka'imi Fairbairn nailed a 24-yard field goal on UCLA's opening drive of the game and Hundley hit Fuller for an 18-yard score later in the frame.
Paul Perkins plunged in from a yard out early in the second to stake the Bruins their 17-point cushion, but a Vincenzo D'Amato 51-yard field goal and a Daniel Lasco 6-yard TD run on back-to-back Cal possessions pulled the Golden Bears within 17-10 late in the second.
UCLA, though, put its foot back on the pedal and tallied the final 20 points of the contest.
Hundley hit Evans and Devin Lucien for completions of 15 and 20 yards, respectively, on the Bruins' next sequence before firing a 27-yard TD pass to Duarte to give the hosts a 24-10 advantage heading into the break.
Fairbairn booted through field goals of 22 and 27 yards, respectively, in the third as UCLA took a healthy 30-10 cushion into the final frame.
Evans' 22-yard TD catch with 4:41 left concluded the scoring.
