Baylor steamrolls Iowa State
Oct 20, 2013 - 6:09 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Petty threw for 343 yards and a pair of first half touchdowns as No. 12 Baylor routed the Iowa State Cyclones, 71-7, on homecoming at Floyd Casey Stadium.Petty completed 23-of-31 before building a comfortable lead and giving way to Seth Russell, who went 5-of-7 for 39 yards. Both quarterbacks ran for a score.
Lache Seastrunk ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns and Antwan Goodley hauled in 11 catches for 182 yards and two scores.
The Bears (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), who cracked the 70-point mark for the fifth time this season, gained 715 yards of total offense while holding ISU to just 173.
"I think we have had confidence in those guys all along. You get eight starters back from a team that held the Pac-12 South Division champs to 19 points in their own backyard is pretty impressive," Baylor head coach Art Briles said of his defensive unit.
Baylor is 6-0 for the sixth time in program history and first time since 1980.
Sam B. Richardson and Grant Rohach split time under center for Iowa State (1-5, 0-3) with minimal success. Richardson completed 7-of-14 for 68 yards and an interception, while Rohach went 8-for-13 for 65 yards, a touchdown and a pick.
"You don't have to tell them much," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said. "They know they just got whipped and I know I just got whipped."
Baylor never get ISU a chance, scoring twice in the early going. Petty threw a fade to Goodley for a 4-yard touchdown at the 9:28 mark of the first, and one minute later Seastrunk took it in from three yards out following Aaron Wimberly's fumble, which put Baylor at the ISU 29. Petty found Tevin Reese for 26 yards prior to the score.
Aaron Jones kicked field goals of 22 and 21 yards on the next two Baylor drives, but the Cyclones could not move the ball on the Bears, who came into the contest ranked 24th in the nation in yards given up.
A 48-yard scamper by Seastrunk set up his 2-yard score a play later and late in the half, Baylor converted on 4th-and-6 for a touchdown when Petty found Goodley for a 36-yard pitch and catch.
The Cyclones then punted and Baylor started with 27 seconds left, which was too much time for Petty and the high-powered offense. Three straight completions to Goodley put the Bears in Jones' field goal range, and the senior drilled a 51-yarder as time expired.
Halftime adjustments wouldn't matter, as Iowa State punted on its first drive and Baylor surged right down the field. Petty called his own number and scored on a quarterback keeper from six yards out for a 44-0 edge.
The Bears also got contributions from special teams in the form of two touchdowns, a 52-yard punt return by Levi Norwood late in the third and a 97- yard Corey Coleman kick return with 34 seconds in the game.
Russell's 40-yard touchdown run up the middle gave Baylor a 58-0 lead. Devin Chafin took a handoff and scored from 21 yards out with 3:48 remaining before ISU finally broke through with a score. With Rohach under center, DeVondrick Neely ran free and caught a 27-yard touchdown pass to prevent the shutout.
