Bulldogs remain unbeaten with OT win over Aztecs

Oct 27, 2013 - 6:58 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcel Jensen blocked a field goal try on the final play of regulation and Marteze Waller scored on a 1-yard run in overtime, as 15th-ranked Fresno State remained unbeaten with a 35-28 win over San Diego State.

The Aztecs (3-4, 2-1 MWC) had an opportunity to pull out the win after rallying from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter. San Diego native Seamus McMorrow, who has never made a field goal for the Aztecs, came on to attempt a 37-yarder with three seconds left. Jensen, though, timed his jump perfectly and the ball fluttered short of the crossbar.

The Bulldogs (7-0, 4-0) fought off a chop block penalty on offensive lineman Cody Wichmann in OT and Derek Carr found Waller for 26 yards on a 1st-and-25 play. Even after a circus catch by Josh Harper in the end zone was overturned by replay, the Bulldogs still managed to move in front.

On 3rd-and-8, Waller rumbled 11 yards with a shovel pass and he then scored up the middle.

Quinn Kaehler's fourth down pass was knocked away by Derron Smith in the end zone to seal the outcome.

Carr completed 35-of-57 passes for 298 yards with a pair of TDs, while Kaehler ended 21-of-39 for 337 yards and an interception. Adam Muema rushed for 111 yards and two TDs for San Diego State, and teammate Ezell Ruffin made 10 catches for 181 yards.

Isaiah Burse scored on a 10-yard run off a direct snap midway through the first quarter, but the Aztecs tied the game at the midpoint of the second when Muema squirted through the middle and scored from 10 yards out.

Muema's 1-yard TD run gave the Aztecs the lead with 5:45 left in the third quarter, but Carr found Davante Adams from 11 yards away for the tying score with 1:50 remaining in the same quarter.

The two hooked up again from 16 yards out with 11:39 remaining in regulation to give the Bulldogs a 21-14 edge.

San Diego State was driving for the possible tying score when Fresno State came up with what looked like was the big play that would push the Bulldogs to victory in regulation. Ruffin coughed up the ball after making a reception, although he initially looked down at the Fresno State 22.

Ejiro Ederaine ripped the ball away and showed it to an official while nearly all of the San Diego State players were standing around thinking the play was blown dead. There was no whistle, though, and Ederaine raced the other way to the end zone for a 28-14 lead with 9:51 to go.

Aaron Boesch scored on a 1-yard run less than a minute later, and the Aztecs executed a successful onside kick. That led to Chad Young's 27-yard TD run with 6:15 left to tie the game.
