Gamecocks rally to topple Gators

Nov 17, 2013 - 5:47 AM Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Elliott Fry kicked a pair of fourth-quarter field goals and Jimmy Legree came up with a key interception in the closing minutes as the 11th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Florida Gators, 19-14, at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Bruce Ellington had four receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown for the Gamecocks. Connor Shaw completed 14-of-28 passes for 213 yards and Shon Carson ran for 102 yards on 13 carries as South Carolina (8-2, 6-2 SEC) extended its home winning streak to 16 games, breaking a school record.

"We weren't very good on offense again. Although we did make 370 yards, that's pretty good I guess. Third downs we struggled again, but we had a lot of long ones. Anyway it worked out again. We're proud of the guys and proud to win 16 in a row here. We're 6-2 in the conference, three years in a row and that's pretty good for us. I'm proud of our players, our players play like winners," said South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg, son of New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, started his first game due to starter Tyler Murphy's sore right shoulder.

Mornhinweg went 10-of-13 for 107 yards, while Kelvin Taylor rushed for 96 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns.

"Well, I am very proud of him. I just told him to cut it loose and have fun. And we weren't going to put a lot on him as far as asking him to do a bunch of different things. We gave them some different looks... did a good job of putting ourselves in position to move the ball, and we did. We had them off balance, especially in the first two drives going down and getting points," said Florida head coach Will Muschamp on Mornhinweg.

Florida (4-6, 3-5) has lost five straight games.

After trailing 14-6 at halftime, South Carolina scored 13 straight points in the second half to account for the final score. On 4th-and-3, Shaw rolled out to his right and aired out a pass to Ellington for 32 yards at the 10:23 mark of the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, Carson exploded up the middle of the field for a 58-yard gain. Three plays later, Rory Anderson made a phenomenal catch over two defenders for 34 yards to setup 1st-and-goal at Florida's 2-yard line. Shaq Roland caught an over-the-shoulder pass in the end zone on third down, but was ruled incomplete after Roland juggled the ball while falling out of bounds.

The Gamecocks settled for a 22-yard field goal to give them a 16-14 lead with 6:43 remaining.

The Gators decided to go for it on 4th-and-13 with a fake punt play. Wide receiver Trey Burton lobbed a pass down the middle of the field, but Leon Orr could not haul in the pass.

South Carolina took over and after three rushes, Fry knocked in his fourth field goal of the night from 43 yards out to extend their lead to 19-14 with a little over two minutes remaining.

Mornhinweg completed a 15-yard pass to Taylor for a first down to Florida's 41. After another first down, Mornhinweg rolled out to his left and threw an interception to Jimmy Legree with 1:22 left, ending Florida's hopes of a comeback.

After Fry knocked in a 25-yard field goal on South Carolina's opening drive, the Gators responded with a touchdown.Taylor found a hole and raced down the sidelines for a 20-yard touchdown late in the first.

A 23-yard catch from Rory Anderson put South Carolina at Florida's 29 to end the first quarter. Fry added another field goal, this time from 45-yards out.

On Florida's second drive of the game, South Carolina defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles jumped on fourth-and-four to extend the Gators' drive. Two plays later, Taylor broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run, his second of the night.

Early in the second frame, Jadeveon Clowney rolled around in pain after putting a big tackle on Brown for a 3-yard loss. He walked off with the help of trainers and favored his right leg. Clowney returned on the next drive and forced a punt after halting Trey Burton for a loss of four yards with a little under six remaining in the first half.

Shaw earned his 24th win as starting quarterback, tying the school record set by Todd Ellis ... South Carolina is 32-3 in their 35 home games ... Florida cornerback Marcus Roberson did not play due to a violation of team rules ... South Carolina has won three of the last four contests over the Gators ... Mornhinweg was 2-for-2 for eight yards at halftime.
