No. 18 LSU stymies Manziel, No. 9 Texas A&M
Nov 24, 2013 - 2:45 AM Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Mettenberger had two touchdown passes, Terrence Magee added a score on the ground and the 18th-ranked LSU Tigers stymied the visiting No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies, 34-10.Mettenberger completed 11-of-20 passes for 193 yards and Magee rushed 13 times for 149 yards. Jeremy Hill had 76 yards on 14 carries for LSU (8-3, 4-3 SEC).
"Offensively, we talked about playing efficient football," said Tigers head coach Les Miles. "The defense was going to get them stopped and we were going to have to possess the ball, to drive the ball, and the only complaint I have is penalties."
Johnny Manziel attempted 41 passes, but completed only 16 of them. He finished with 224 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for Texas A&M (8-3, 4-3), which had a pair of streaks come to an end.
The Aggies had scored at least 40 points in 13 straight games and had totaled at least 500 yards in each of their last nine contests. They registered 299 yards on Saturday.
"We weren't able to stay on the field offensively, and because of that, our defense got grinded down," said Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. "You have to give LSU credit across the board."
LSU rolled the dice on its first drive of the game, electing to go for it on 4th-and-inches from its own 39. Anthony Jennings kept the ball on a plunge and the ruling was he came up short. The Tigers challenged the play, but there was not sufficient evidence to overturn the call.
The LSU defense responded with a big stop on fourth down as Manziel was tackled a yard shy at the 30.
After the teams traded punts, Magee put the Tigers on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run. He accounted for all 71 yards on the 5-play drive, highlighted by his 65-yard scamper.
Mettenberger began the next LSU drive with a 36-yard completion to Dillon Gordon. The possession stretched into the second quarter and on the seventh play, he hooked up with Jarvis Landry for a 10-yard TD.
The Aggies then turned the ball over on downs again, this time from the LSU 3, when Manziel's pass fell incomplete.
LSU went three-and-out and Texas A&M got the ball back in excellent field position after Jamie Keehn's shanked punt. The 14-yard punt went out of bounds at the LSU 26.
The Tigers defense held Texas A&M to a 41-yard Josh Lambo field goal.
LSU appeared to be in trouble on its next drive, facing a 3rd-and-16 from its own 3-yard line. Mettenberger, though, moved the chains with a 19-yard pass to Odell Beckham, Jr, who slipped a tackle to get the first down.
Mettenberger converted another long third down with a 20-yard toss to Hill, who advanced the ball across midfield. A 40-yard TD reception by Landry followed two plays later and put the Tigers up 21-3 with 1:37 remaining in the second.
The Aggies had a quick response prior to halftime, with Manziel throwing consecutive completions, the second a 51-yard scoring strike to Derel Walker.
LSU opened the third quarter by orchestrating a 13-play, 71-yard drive. The Tigers stalled at the Texas A&M four and Colby Delahoussaye kicked a 21-yard field goal.
Rashard Robinson then picked off Manziel and the turnover resulted in a 2-yard TD run by Kenny Hilliard. Delahoussaye added a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter ahead of Craig Loston's interception of Manziel at the goal line.
