East tops West in Shrine Game
Jan 19, 2014 - 2:26 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Garoppolo threw a second- quarter touchdown pass to Matt Hazel, Zach Hocker made three field goals and the East beat the West by a 23-13 margin in the 89th edition of the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday.Garoppolo of Eastern Illinois, who captured the Walter Payton Award for the most outstanding player in FCS, completed 8-of-14 passes for 98 yards for the East squad that was coached by Jerry Glanville, former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oilers. Garoppolo was named the game's offensive MVP.
Northern Arizona running back Zach Bauman carried the ball eight times for 55 yards and Michigan wide receiver Jeremy Gallon caught four passes for 55 yards.
Keith Wenning of Ball State connected on 12-of-19 passes for 82 yards and an interception for the West team that was led by Romeo Crennel, former head coach of the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.
Toledo wide receiver Bernard Reedy hauled in four passes for 46 yards and a score.
The first quarter featured a pair of field goals. Hocker made a 31-yarder and Anthony Fera was good from 34 yards out.
Fera added a 37-yard field goal early in the second stanza, making it 6-3 in favor of the West.
Hocker made a 34-yard field goal with 2:45 left to tie the game. Hazel caught a 1-yard TD pass from Garoppolo with eight seconds remaining to make it 13-6 at halftime.
Reedy caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Washington's Keith Price early in the third frame to make it a 13-13 game.
Hocker's 57-yard field goal with 11:16 to go in the fourth gave the East squad the lead before Nevin Lawson, a cornerback from Utah State, returned a fumble five yards for a touchdown to give the East a 23-13 edge.
Ethan Westbrooks, a defensive tackle from West Texas A&M, was named the defensive MVP.
The East team held on to snap a two-game skid in the series.
