Nebraska visits Wake Forest in interconference battle
Sep 8, 2007 - 10:28 AM WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Bill Callahan shored up his long-term future with Nebraska. Now he will have to secure his team's long-term future in the national rankings.No. 16 Nebraska plays its first game since signing Callahan to a contract extension when the Cornhuskers visit Wake Forest on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the school announced a five-year extension for Callahan, which keeps him under contract through the 2011 season.
Callahan coached Nebraska to the Big 12 Conference's North Division title last season with a 9-5 record, the Cornhuskers' first division title since 1999.
Marlon Lucky rushed for a career-high 233 yards and three touchdowns last week as Nebraska opened its season with a 52-10 rout of Nevada. Lucky's total was a school record in a season opener.
He also helped Nebraska through the air, catching three passes for 33 yards, including his first career TD reception. Lucky became the first Cornhusker to score four touchdowns in a game since David Horne accomplished the feat at Texas A&M in 2002.
Nebraska's high-powered rushing attack rolled up 413 yards on 70 attempts against the Wolf Pack.
Wake Forest, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion, is hoping to avoid an 0-2 start but could be without its starting quarterback.
Riley Skinner suffered a mild separated shoulder in the third quarter of last week's 38-28 loss at Boston College. He was injured after scrambling from the pocket and was replaced by Brett Hodges.
Skinner completed 28-of-37 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times. Kenneth Moore tied a Wake Forest record with 15 catches - one short of the ACC mark - for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Taking over late in the third quarter, Hodges played well in relief, completing 17-of-23 passes for 130 yards and a TD.
However, Wake Forest's defense looked nothing like the unit that helped the Demon Deacons capture their first ACC title a year ago.
Boston College's Matt Ryan burned Wake Forest's secondary by throwing five touchdown passes. Ryan was 32-of-52 for a career-high 408 yards.
