No. 23 UCLA clips Colorado in double OT

Oct 26, 2014 - 4:44 AM Boulder, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Hundley's 8-yard touchdown run in the second overtime gave No. 25 UCLA a 40-37 win over Colorado on Saturday.

After Ka'imi Fairbairn and Will Oliver exchanged field goals in the first overtime, Oliver hit a 34-yarder to give Colorado the lead in the second extra session.

Hundley, though, took the first snap 17 yards, then used a fake handoff to set up his keep up the middle and into the end zone for the win.

Hundley went 24-for-39 for 200 yards and a score, adding 110 yards on the ground on 12 carries for the Bruins (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12), who have won their past two. Paul Perkins had 180 yards on 19 carries with two scores.

"We won our first overtime game and there is a lot to improve on as always, that's about it," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said.

Sefo Liufau went 27-for-45 for 246 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Buffaloes (2-6, 0-5), who have lost four straight.

"All I could think about when it ended was what I was going to tell those young men when I get back in that locker room and I see those big, crocodile tears along with the effort, hard work, blood and sweat. Sometimes life is not fair," Buffaloes head coach Mike MacIntyre said.

Colorado trailed by 17 points entering the fourth quarter, but made it a 10- point game two minutes in as Bryce Bobo caught a 38-yard score from Liufau.

After a three-and-out from UCLA, the Buffaloes found the end zone again as it was Bobo again on a 3-yard score to cap an eight-play, 64-yard drive with 7:52 to play.

UCLA again punted, but Marcus Rios picked off Liufau. Colorado's defense held, though, and the offense got the ball back with under three minutes to play in regulation.

A defensive holding on third down gave the Buffaloes a fresh set of downs, and the team got three straight first downs thanks to a 12-yard catch from D.D. Goodson and runs of 12 and 11 yards from Tony Jones. Oliver hit a 35-yard field goal with 36 seconds left to force overtime.

UCLA's first offensive snap of the game saw the team find success, as Perkins took a handoff 92 yards for a score and a quick 7-0 lead just over two minutes in.

The Bruins padded their lead with another score later in the first. The eight- play, 55-yard drive was capped on a 20-yard scoring catch by Jordan Payton from Hundley for a 14-0 lead with 5 1/2 minutes left in the first.

Eric Kendricks intercepted a Liufau pass on Colorado's next touch, leading to a 31-yard field goal from Fairbairn to make it a 17-0 game.

Colorado finally got on the board in the second quarter after starting a drive at its own 30. After converting a 4th-and-1 when Michael Adkins II ran the ball for two yards, Liufau hit Jones for 20 yards down to the UCLA 2. After a roughing the passer call on third down, Jones punched the ball in to make it a 17-7 game.

The Bruins answered, though, with a quick six-play, 75-yard drive that Perkins finished off with a 24-yard run into the end zone and a 24-7 lead with under five minutes to play in the first half.

The Buffaloes came back with another touchdown, as Adkins took a handoff 17 yards into the end zone to make it a 10-point game with 1:46 to play in the half.

A fumble by Hundley saw Colorado recover at the UCLA 32 with a chance to cut further into the deficit before the half. However, Goodson was unable to get out of bounds on a reception to keep the clock running. Colorado hurried to the line and tried to get a snap off, but a false start penalty ran off the rest of clock.

It stayed a 10-point game late through the third quarter until the Bruins added to their lead thanks to a 3-yard touchdown run from Myles Jack.
