No. 3 Oregon rolls past Oregon State in Civil War

Nov 30, 2014 - 8:22 AM Corvallis, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - The 118th installment of the Civil War wasn't even close as Marcus Mariota led No. 3 Oregon to a 47-19 rout of Oregon State on Saturday.

Mariota polished off the regular season and his potential Heisman Trophy campaign with six total touchdowns in helping the Ducks (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12) down their in-state rival for the seventh consecutive time.

He threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 39 yards and two scores.

"It was the week of preparation," Mariota said of the offensive success. "The coaches did an awesome job of preparing us for every look that they were going to give us."

Oregon now sets its sights on a meeting with Arizona in the Pac-12 championship on Friday night. The Wildcats handed the Ducks their lone loss of the season, a 31-24 setback in Eugene on Oct. 2. Oregon has won seven consecutive games since.

Royce Freeman rushed for 135 yards and caught a touchdown pass, Charles Nelson hauled in two touchdowns from Mariota, and Byron Marshall led the team with 131 yards receiving in the win.

Sean Mannion threw for 162 yards with a touchdown and Storm Woods rushed for 128 yards with a touchdown for Oregon State (5-7, 2-7), which has lost two straight and six of its last seven overall.

"I was very disappointed," said Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. "The other disappointment I have is that we can't start practicing tomorrow for next year."

The Ducks took the crowd at Reser Stadium right out of it from the onset courtesy of 30 straight points.

Oregon marched right down the field for 71 yards on nine plays to begin the game. No play was longer than nine yards until the final snap, as Mariota hit a wide open Nelson for a 29-yard touchdown along the near sideline. The Ducks were then unsuccessful on their two-point conversion attempt.

The Oregon defense stood tall on the Beavers' ensuing possession. Oregon State got a favorable 40-yard kickoff return from Malcolm Marable, but its drive stalled when Damien Haskins was stuffed for a loss on 4th-and-1 from the Ducks 30.

Mariota proceeded to lead a quick drive that resulted in a 30-yard field goal from Matt Wogan for a 9-0 lead.

Following an Oregon State punt, Mariota capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a beautiful lead pass to Freeman on a short wheel route for a 12-yard touchdown.

"It was exactly what I thought it would be, the fans were really into it and just the atmosphere," Freeman said of the Civil War. "It was really great to be out there."

It took Oregon just 2:43 over its next two possessions to blow the game open. Mariota hooked up with Marshall for a 77-yard TD pass, then he busted off a 23-yard touchdown run on a read option off tackle for a 30-0 lead.

The Beavers finally broke through on their final sequence of the half. Mannion completed a 5-yard pass to Ricky Ortiz on 4th-and-1 at the Oregon 20, but he was sacked on first down and the hosts had to settle for a 39-yard field goal from Garrett Owens.

Wogan and the Ducks answered that field goal with one early in the third to restore the 30-point lead.

Mannion and Hunter Jarmon countered with a 20-yard touchdown, but Oregon's explosive offense was showcased on the next drive.

Following a holding penalty that negated a first-down run from Mariota, Darren Carrington caught a pass over the middle and raced downfield inside the Oregon State 10 for a 58-yard gain. Mariota then followed his blockers off the right tackle on 4th-and-goal from the 1 and waltzed into the end zone for a 40-10 game late in the third.

Mannion and the Beavers moved swiftly down the field on their next set of downs. Woods pulled in a 23-yard pass to set up his 3-yard touchdown scamper early in the fourth.

Mariota hit Nelson for a 27-yard score later in the fourth and Oregon was forced into a safety to cap the scoring.
