Brohm, defense lead Louisville past Cincinnati
Oct 14, 2007 - 4:29 AM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Louisville is known for its offensive prowess, but it was a much-maligned defense that knocked Cincinnati from the ranks of the unbeaten. The Cardinals' defense made a fourth-down stop near midfield in the fourth quarter and a goal-line stand minutes later to pull out a 28-24 victory over the 15th-ranked Bearcats, who had the nation's longest winning streak for about three hours.
"This is our most complete game," Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe said. It's an upset. All the (ESPN) Game Day people picked Cincinnati."
Cincinnati's nine-game winning streak became the longest current streak in the nation after top-ranked Louisiana State dropped a 43-37 contest in three overtimes against Kentucky earlier Saturday.
"Give Louisville credit. With their front four, they got good pressure," Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said. "(Quarterback Ben Mauck) had to move his feet too much. You don't like to see it when your quarterback can't set his feet. They played a lot of zone, but they got good pressure with their front four."
The streak didn't last long, as Brian Brohm threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns for Louisville (4-3, 1-1 Big East Conference), which has won five straight meetings with Cincinnati.
"We tried to take care of the ball in the passing game," Brohm said. "We knew they would give us things underneath and when they do that they are trying to bait you into trying to force things."
After Mauk's third touchdown of the night and second to Marcus Barnett gave Cincinnati a 21-14 lead with 4:54 left in the third period, Louisville went 83 yards on six plays, tying the contest on Brohm's six-yard TD pass to Patrick Carter with 20 seconds left in the third.
On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Cincinnati went for a 4th-and-1 from the Louisville 45, but Mauk was stopped inches short on a sneak.
"After we didn't make it, absolutely, I second-guessed myself," Kelly said. "But that's something I do and will continue to do."
After surrendering 203 yards in the first three drives to Cincinnati, Louisville allowed just 240 the final three quarters.
"Louisville's got a great defense. It's not like you're just playing against air out there," Mauck said. "I made some bad decisions. I'm going to have to play better if we're going to continue to win. Win or lose, we were going to put this game away. We're 0-0 going into the next game."
Brohm then hit Harry Douglas for 52 yards down the left sideline as he wrestled the ball away from the defender, and Anthony Allen scored a three-yard TD run on the next play to give Louisville its first lead, 28-21, with 11:27 left in the game.
"On Harry's catch, they had it pretty well covered but I just threw it up there and thought, 'Harry make a play,'" Brohm said.
Cincinnati then drove the length of the field for a 1st-and-goal from the 2 before settling for a 24-yard field goal by Jake Rogers with 8:46 remaining.
Louisville's defense forced two incompletions and a rush for no yards during its stand.
"Like anytime two good teams go after it, it comes down to just a couple of plays," Kelly said. "We had first-and-goal from the 2 and couldn't get a touchdown. We had to settle for three, and that's the difference in the game."
Louisville controlled the ball for most of the remaining time, converting a fourth-and-1 from its own 29. Brohm got the yard with a few inches to spare, and Louisville was able to run precious minutes off the clock.
"The fourth down call, I really didn't want to give them the ball yet," Kragthorpe said. "We only needed a yard, so I said, 'What the heck we came to win.'"
"I was a little surprised we went for the first down, but I was happy when the call came in," Brohm said. "It showed he had confidence in us. I had confidence I was going to get it."
The Bearcats got the ball back for one last drive. However, Mauk was intercepted in his own end of the field to seal the game for Louisville.
Mauk was 26-of-45 for 324 yards and three TDs, but his interception was the last of four Cincinnati (6-1, 1-1) turnovers.
Louisville's defense had surrendered at least 38 points in four of its five previous games and allowed 203 yards in the first quarter before stiffening.
