Tennessee looks for easier win vs. UL-Lafayette

Nov 3, 2007 - 10:41 AM UL-Lafayette (1-7) at No. 24 Tennessee (5-3) 4:00 pm EDT

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Embattled coach Phil Fulmer and Tennessee have one last breather before the stretch run of Southeastern Conference games.

Fulmer's 24th-ranked Volunteers host Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference game on Saturday. Last week, the Vols blew a big lead before edging South Carolina in overtime here, 27-24.

Daniel Lincoln booted a tying 48-yard field goal with five seconds left, then scored the only points of the extra session with a 27-yarder for Tennessee, which squandered a 21-0 third-quarter lead.

The Vols, who control their own destiny in the SEC East Division, finish their regular season with games vs. Arkansas and Vanderbilt and at Kentucky.

Louisiana-Lafayette is tied for fifth in the Sun Belt Conference, the worst league in what used to be called Division I-A.

The Ragin' Cajuns have dropped consecutive contests, including a 39-32 overtime setback to Florida Atlantic last week in which they gave up a tying touchdown with seven seconds left in regulation.

Quarterback Michael Desormeaux ran for 145 yards and two TDs, including a 32-yard score that had put the hosts up by seven points with 1:03 to play.

In the only previous meeting, in 1992, the Vols cruised to a 38-3 win over was then called Southwestern Louisiana. It was Fulmer's first coaching victory.
