Purdue promotes Malone to offensive coordinator
Dec 22, 2015 - 8:13 PM WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Purdue tight ends coach Terry Malone was named the team's offensive coordinator on Tuesday.Malone, who still will coach tight ends, has a ''winning pedigree,'' Coach Darrell Hazell said in a news release, adding that he looks ''forward to sitting down with him once we get back from the holiday break and putting our offense together.''
Malone joined the Purdue staff in February after nine seasons as the tight ends coach with the New Orleans Saints. He also has been an offensive coordinator at Michigan and Bowling Green, and worked at Boston College and Holy Cross.
During his time as offensive coordinator at Michigan from 2002 to 2005, the team had 14 first-team All-Big Ten selections, four All-Americans and two Big Ten Player of the Year awards. He also was a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach, in 2003 when Michigan went 10-3, was Big Ten conference champions and broke school passing records.
''I am very excited and appreciative for this opportunity,'' Malone said in the release. ''We have a great group of young players that I am anxious to see have success.''
Purdue went 2-10 overall and 1-7 in the Big Ten this season, after which Hazell fired offensive coordinator John Shoop, defensive coordinator Greg Hudson and defensive tackles coach Rubin Carter.
