Missouri adds Jackie Shipp as defensive line coach
Feb 4, 2016 - 1:50 AM COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) New Missouri coach Barry Odom filled an unexpected vacancy by hiring Jackie Shipp to coach the defensive line.''I was joking around that I've already got a coaching tree,'' Odom said Wednesday. ''You sure don't think that's going to happen, especially when you interview and hire a guy, but it did.''
Shipp said he spoke to Odom for the first time Sunday or Monday.
''It really came faster than I thought it would,'' Shipp said. ''It was kind of an emotional thing, it's been going pretty fast.''
The 53-year-old Shipp was at Arizona State the previous three seasons, helping that school reach bowl games each year, and is among five assistants to leave after a 6-7 season. He has coached for 25 years, all but one on the defensive line, including four national championship games.
Shipp replaces Chris Wilson, who left to join the Philadelphia Eagles late last month.
''I always have a list of guys you want to hire,'' Odom said. ''If you ever just have one guy on your list, that's probably not pretty good.''
No one has shouted yet.
