Randy Moss' son headlines NC State's recruiting class

Feb 3, 2016 - 11:14 PM RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Randy Moss is sending his son to North Carolina State.

The biggest name in N.C. State's 27-man recruiting class is Thaddeus Moss, the son of the former NFL star receiver.

The younger Moss is a 6-foot-4, 247-pound tight end who helped Charlotte Mallard Creek claim its third straight Class 4-AA state championship.

Coach Dave Doeren says he appreciates his newest player's pedigree but doesn't want the signing to be entirely about his famous dad.

''All of us that recruited Thaddeus were respectful of his family heritage,'' Doeren said. ''But it's about Thaddeus and not his dad. Not to say the dads aren't important, but it's (Thaddeus') path and his future here and his story to write.''

The Wolfpack went 7-6 and lost to Mississippi State in the Belk Bowl during Doeren's third season. His latest class includes 23 scholarship players and four preferred walk-ons.

The highest-rated offensive signee is wideout Kelvin Harmon, who had originally committed to South Carolina but opened his options after coach Steve Spurrier stepped down.

''When you look at what we were trying to do in continuing to build competitive depth, we were trying to get longer in some positions,'' Doeren said. ''I think if you look at the height and wingspan it's very important.''

Top 25 Class: No.

Best in class: Thaddeus Moss, TE, Charlotte.

Best of the rest: Kelvin Harmon, WR, Palmyra, New Jersey.

Late addition: Harmon, originally a South Carolina recruit who decommitted amid the Gamecocks' coaching change to Will Muschamp.

One that got away: Dexter Lawrence, DT, Wake Forest, signed with Clemson.

How they'll fit in: Doeren says he'd like to redshirt all but about six players. Moss and Harmon seem to be extreme talents who should have a chance to play soon. Frazier should be strong enough to make a quick impact.
