Texas opens Big 12 play against Iowa State

Sep 19, 2006 - 9:07 PM Iowa St (2-1) at No. 7 Texas (2-1), 3:30 pm EDT

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) - Seventh-ranked Texas begins defense of its Big 12 Conference title Saturday when it hosts Iowa State, which never has defeated the Longhorns.

The defending national champions, the Longhorns are a perfect 5-0 against the Cyclones.

The teams have not met since 2003, when Texas posted a 40-19 victory in Ames. In the last meeting here in 2002, Iowa State held a 10-7 halftime lead before Texas scored 14 unanswered points after the break.

Texas (2-1, 0-0 Big 12 South) rebounded from a 24-7 home loss to top-ranked Ohio State two weeks ago with a 52-7 road rout of Rice.

Selvin Young and Jamaal Charles each ran for more than 100 yards for the Longhorns, who won easily despite committing a school-record 19 penalties for 148 yards.

"You want to be in a position to play for extra stuff after your conference play is over, but that is where you have to start," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "This weekend is obviously the beginning of something new and exciting for these guys. They have finished with the first three. You learn from them, you move forward, but it is all about Iowa State this weekend."

Iowa State (2-1, 0-0 North) is coming off a 27-17 loss at Iowa in which it held a 14-3 lead late in the second quarter.

Bret Meyer both passed and ran for a touchdown for the Cyclones, who rushed for 171 yards against a team that had yielded just 40 per game on the ground.
