Robertson rehabbed, seeks NFL opportunity
Apr 18, 2016 - 3:12 PM (STATS) - Former Villanova quarterback John Robertson is not expected to be selected in the NFL Draft next week. That may be beneficial for him.
Going undrafted can allow a player to pick between multiple contracts offers and sign with the franchise that is the best fit opportunity-wise.
Robertson shined as the FCS Offensive Player of the Year in 2014, but missed much of his senior season last year after tearing the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Sept. 19.
Seven months later, Robertson appears fully healthy. And much like another quarterback who succeeded him as the CAA Football offensive player of the year, James Madison's Vad Lee - who has a similar skill set and size, and was injured last season as well - the 6-foot-1, 225-pound Robertson used his rehabilitation to develop as a passer after being a dual-threat signal caller working out of a spread offense.
At Villanova's pro day earlier this month, Robertson made that something to emphasize for NFL scouts.
"I think the first thing was just that I was healthy and I worked hard to rehab my knee - that's not a problem anymore," Robertson told Football Gameplan. "Once I was able to accomplish that, I was working with my QB coaches and just trying to show how much of a better passer I am, and just how I took steps forward in sitting in the pocket, moving around and not being the typical dual-threat guy, but an NFL quarterback."
Robertson often relied on his athletic ability to make positive plays on the run for Villanova because he knew he could on the FCS level. He accounted for 10,933 yards (7,290 passing, 3,643 rushing) and 113 touchdowns (65 passing, 48 rushing) in his career.
His excellent accuracy was sometimes overlooked because he dominated games with his legs as much as his arm. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes and threw only 18 interceptions.
Now John Robertson just waits for an opportunity to prove himself again in an NFL camp.
No one has shouted yet.
