LSU tries to shake off tough defeat Saturday vs. Tulane

Sep 19, 2006 - 9:13 PM Tulane (1-1) at No. 10 LSU (2-1), 8:00 pm EDT

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) - Tenth-ranked Louisiana State tries to forget about its last game when it resumes its series against intrastate foe Tulane.

Despite yet another stellar defensive effort, the Tigers (2-1) came up short in a 7-3 loss at Auburn last Saturday in a key Southeastern Conference West Division matchup.

LSU outgained Auburn, 311-182, but it was not enough. On the final play, LSU's Craig Davis was tackled by Auburn's Eric Brock about five yards shy of the end zone.

The Tigers lead the country in total defense, limiting opponents to 170 yards per game, and rank third in scoring defense at 4.33 points per contest.

This will be the first of 10 games between the teams over the next decade. Although they have met on 94 previous occasions, they have played just twice since 1994, with LSU posting victories of 35-17 in 1996 and 48-17 in 2001.

The Tigers have won the last 14 meetings since a 31-28 setback in Baton Rouge in 1982. Tulane (1-1), which is concluding a season-opening three-game road trip, will be playing its second straight SEC foe. Last weekend, the Green Wave edged Mississippi State, 32-29.

Lester Ricard threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns and Matt Forte rushed for 170 yards and a score for the Green Wave, who held a 32-7 lead after three quarters before holding on.
