Riese a standout in UNH spring game
May 7, 2016 - 9:16 PM (STATS) - New Hampshire's new Wildcat Stadium is taking shape for the inaugural season ahead. So, too, is UNH's lineup.
After losing half of their starters from last season, the Wildcats hope they put a lot of the pieces together during spring practices, which concluded Saturday with the annual intrasquad game at Cowell Stadium.
The game matched the offense versus the defense. Quarterback Adam Riese was 21 of 33 for 263 yards and two touchdowns, running back Trevon Bryant scored on two 1-yard runs and wide receiver Kyon Taylor reeled in eight passes for 100 yards. Cornerback Ismail Asongwed collected a game-high five tackles and linebacker Ryan Farrell had two sacks.
"This helps," 18th-year coach Sean McDonnell said. "It's the first time for some of these guys that haven't played in almost a year - some of the redshirt freshmen. And then the upperclassmen are stepping into roles some of them haven't been in before, so it's good for them to get out and have a game-like situation to finish it up."
UNH is coming off a 7-5 season in which it reached the FCS playoffs for the 12th straight year - the nation's longest active streak. The Wildcats will open the 2016 season at San Diego State on Sept. 3 and then christen Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 10 against Holy Cross.
There will be plenty of change. There are only four returning starters on defense, although one is All-America cornerback Casey DeAndrade.
The offense has seven returning starters but must replace veteran quarterback Sean Goldrich. Riese, a senior, will finally become the starter, while running back Dalton Crossman and tight end Jordan Powell are expected to be the featured players.
Earlier Saturday, DeAndrade, Riese and Farrell were named UNH's captains.
No one has shouted yet.
