Tennessee concludes homestand against Marshall

Sep 19, 2006 - 9:26 PM Marshall (1-2) at No. 15 Tennessee (2-1), 4:00 pm EDT

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - Fifteenth-ranked Tennessee looks to conclude a season-opening four-game homestand on a high note when it hosts Marshall on Saturday.

The Volunteers (2-1) looked brilliant in their 35-18 victory over then-No. 8 California on September 2. But they have looked ordinary since.

The Vols needed a stop on a two-point conversion to hold off Air Force the following week, 31-30, and blew a 10-point third-quarter lead in a 21-20 setback to Southeastern Conference East Division rival Florida a week ago.

Erik Ainge was intercepted twice, including one at the Florida 24 with 2:42 to play. The Vols were held to minus-11 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Tennessee is 13-1 against current Conference USA teams under coach Phillip Fulmer, including a 34-24 home victory over Marshall in 2003 in the first meeting between the teams.

Playing its second season under coach Mark Snyder, Marshall (1-2) is coming off a 23-7 setback at Kansas State last Saturday.

Bernard Morris threw for just 92 yards and was intercepted twice for the Thundering Herd, who were held to just 142 total yards.
